The soft rays of morning light filtered through the curtains, casting a golden glow across the room. Jennie stirred, her eyes fluttering open as she felt a warm weight pull her closer. Lisa's arm had wrapped itself snugly around Jennie's waist, tugging her into the warmth of her body. Jennie smiled sleepily, her heart fluttering at the familiar closeness. She didn't mind—she never did. In fact, she loved these moments, quiet and intimate, when it was just the two of them, no distractions.
Lisa's steady breathing behind her lulled Jennie back into a light doze, letting the comfort of the moment sweep her away for a couple more hours. It wasn't until the sharp, persistent sound of Lisa's alarm echoed through the room that they were rudely jolted awake. Lisa groaned in annoyance, blindly swiping at her phone to hit the snooze button, but instead of silencing it, she misjudged the edge of the bed and rolled right off, landing with a loud thud.
Jennie shot up at the sound, her eyes wide in shock before dissolving into laughter. She peeked over the side of the bed, finding Lisa sprawled out on the floor, rubbing her shoulder and grimacing in pain, but laughing along with her.
"Good morning," Lisa said, her face peeking up from the edge of the bed, a lopsided grin on her face despite the pain in her bruised shoulder.
Jennie giggled, shaking her head at the sight of her best friend, clumsy as always. "Good morning, clumsy ass," she teased, a playful glint in her eyes.
Lisa winced as she got to her feet, stretching her arms before hissing at the pain in her shoulder. She rolled her shoulder back, trying to shake it off, but the soreness was still there.
Jennie's expression shifted to one of concern as she watched Lisa move. "Lisa, you're always hurting yourself," Jennie said softly, her eyes tracing the bruise forming on Lisa's skin. "You keep forgetting you're injured."
Lisa gave her a small smile, but there was something deeper behind it, something Jennie couldn't quite place. "I'm already broken," Lisa said quietly, her voice dropping to a more serious tone.
Jennie frowned, her heart squeezing at the words. "What do you mean?"
Lisa was silent for a moment, her gaze drifting to the floor, her thoughts swirling with unspoken feelings. She knew exactly what she meant—she was hurting because she couldn't tell Jennie what she really felt, because she'd been hiding her feelings for so long. It was breaking her apart from the inside, but she couldn't find the right words to say it. Not yet.
The room was quiet, the weight of the unsaid hanging between them. But Lisa quickly shook it off, forcing a laugh to lighten the mood. "Anyway," she said, breaking the silence, "I'd love to cook for you, but I've got nothing in the fridge."
Jennie tilted her head, her worry not entirely gone, but letting Lisa steer the conversation. "So, what's the plan then?"
Lisa's eyes sparkled with a hint of mischief. "I've decided we're going on a date today."
Jennie raised an eyebrow, surprised by the sudden announcement. "A date?" she echoed, half-teasing. "You're still hung up on Alex taking me out, aren't you?"
Lisa scoffed, rolling her eyes playfully. "Pfft, jealous? Why would I be jealous? I know I'm better," she replied with a smirk, her confidence shining through.
Jennie couldn't help but laugh at her friend's bravado. "Okay, Mr. Smarty Pants," she shot back, crossing her arms with a playful grin.
Lisa winked and walked toward her closet. "Trust me, you'll enjoy it."
Jennie rolled her eyes, but a smile tugged at her lips. Lisa always had a way of turning things around, of making her laugh even in the most unexpected moments. As Lisa rummaged through her closet, Jennie realized she had left some clothes at Lisa's place from previous stays. It was a normal occurrence for her to crash at Lisa's apartment, and over time, some of her things had just found a home here.
