I scanned the area once more, trying to make sense of the situation.
After two and a half minutes of pointless gazing, I realised that there was only one logical answer: the paper had been dropped on purpose, in an attempt to throw León and I off track and confuse us. My theory seemed more than reasonable, but somehow, I couldn't help but feel betrayed by Nata. She and I had been such close friends; she had been my confidante in the Heavens and she would always defend me and protect me when I had felt like a mere vulnerable human being instead of feeling as celestial as an angel.
What had pushed her to do this?
This thought ran continuously through my mind -almost haunting it- as I told León about my thoughts concerning Natalia.
"I'm sorry León," I started, turning to face him after a few minutes. "I truly am. The note was a red herring." I dropped my head in shame, feeling too humiliated to face him.
" Violett-," León protested, wanting to reassure me.
I interrupted him in an instant, not wanting to hear his words of comfort and encouragement which I didn't deserve.
"No, León. I screwed up, I'm sorry. I should've known that the note was just another distraction. I'm more clever than that... I guess I was just so damn desperate to obtain clues that I fell into her trap."
"I'm sorry," I whispered for the third time, lifting my head so that I was facing him again. I was certain that the tears falling from my eyes were now visible on my cheeks and that my appearance was probably scruffy and untidy; but I honestly couldn't care less right at this very moment.
And without saying a word, León slowly grabbed my wrists and pulled me into his arms, enveloping me in a tight yet gentle hug, which I had no choice but to give in to.
"Listen to me, Vilu," he whispered in my ear whilst rubbing my back with his spare arm. I nodded in between sobs, inviting my partner to continue.
"This was not your fault and you are absolutely not to blame for what happened today, do you understand me? Anyone as distraught as you would have made that mistake. We have to move on to the more optimistic side of your- our -error: now that we know that she left the paper intentionally, we know that she is definitely hiding something."
He lifted my head from his chest and gently rested his hands on my shoulders before continuing his motivational speech.
"And trust me, we will discover her secret, that I can assure you."
After hearing his last words, I felt the corners of my mouth rise up a little.
Maybe there was still hope, after all.

We both started walking on the sidewalk in silence- neither of us knew what to do next: should we continue searching or simply call it a day and go back home?
Just as I opened my mouth to question León, he spoke up.
"I think... that we should resume our investigation. Naty 's peculiar behaviour gave us quite a large clue and if we surrender now, we won't get any closer to obtaining what we want."
"Mmh. You have a point. Besides, we've had this conversation too many times. It's time to stop doubting ourselves and just fucking get the job done!" I exclaimed with confidence, wearing a faux serious expression on my face as I looked at León.
He chuckled lightly at my newfound enthusiasm but gave me a nod of approval.
"That's the spirit, Violetta!"
I shook my head at him before seizing his hand and dragging him behind me as we sauntered down the street.
*******************
We made small talk whilst keeping our eyes peeled for anything strange or abnormal, but to no avail.
It was only approximately an hour and a half later that something caught my eye.
