“You are never going to guess what!”

Barging through the office door comes a very excited Marjorie, hoping to startle a younger Autumn, however her efforts are in vain as Autumn isn't one to get scared. To be fair, Autumn isn't one to show any emotions really, whether she is feeling them or not, unless it is some way of showing how annoyed the older colleague has made her. Telling by the look on her face, Marjorie has succeeded in that department once again.

Choosing to ignore the chaos that has just abruptly interrupted her work would be useless. Autumn knows that to be true after countless months working alongside Marjorie, so she chooses to indulge in the excitement the other woman was extruding.

“You are right, well done, I will never guess, realistically you should know I would never even attempt to guess-” Autumn states, rolling her eyes to punctuate her sentence with her annoyance.

“-So you may as well tell me rather than endangering yourself with mindless guessing games.” The stern tone in Autumn's voice corrects Marjorie's behaviour almost instantly as she quiets her tone.

Stating that the conversation was a bore would be an understatement, Aut really did not care for this “hot” single dad that fussed over Marj. If she was being completely honest, Marjorie could do better. That's not something she'd ever admit to the woman though. That was until, however, Marjorie mentioned asking the dad, that the pair had come to know as Dave, out on a date. It was undeniable that the two had chemistry, anyone with a brain could sense that from rooms in the nursery the pair weren't even in, especially as Marjorie waltzed around with a notably larger grin than usual on her face. However, this didn't stop it from irritating Autumn.

What did that man have that Autumn didn't?? How could such a beautiful, caring woman love a man like that and not her?

These thoughts running through Autumn's mind disturbed her, she'd never thought like this before. While in her thoughts she'd completely tuned out Marjorie’s voice and failed to notice her attempts at getting her attention.

Shaking the thoughts off, she suddenly became aware of Marjorie's voice again and felt a tad bit bad about leaving her on heard as the woman had obviously let it get to her head.

“I- I'm sorry Autumn, I know we aren't that close and you definitely don't want to hear about this, I just got excited that's all and I wanted to tell someone. I'm sorry. Normally I'd go to Charlotte but she is working with Carly and I didn't exactly want her eavesdropping little ears to hear all this…I- again I'm sorry. I'll shut up.”

Marjorie stammered nervously as she couldn't shake the feeling that she'd annoyed her deputy. On the other hand, Autumn couldn't help but wonder what made Marjorie feel like she needed to apologise so much when someone goes quiet.

“You should wait….until he asks you out.”
Autumn finally spoke up again after an agonisingly slow few minutes. She normally wouldn't care to respond but after Marjorie's outburst, it felt necessary to comfort her friend.

Friend

Marj's confusion subsided as Autumn explained her reasoning for her comment. Explaining that if Dave was really interested in her, he would ask her out on a date, if not then it really was just mindless flirting on his part which Autumn felt she didn't deserve. She deserves so much better than that man.

She deserves better than a man.

Evidently, Autumn's reasoning behind this was slightly selfish, although she did care about who her friend ended up with, she knew Dave would never actually ask Marjorie out as he was known to flirt with a lot of women in the nursery, barking up the wrong tree at points. The longer she had Marjorie single, the longer she had to figure out how to explain her feelings to her.

“Eh well i should have expected this from you Aut~”

“Don't call m- wait, what is that supposed to mean?”

“You aren't really a big fan of men are you? hey hey?”

“Now you sound like a seagull.”

“HEY! You are just saying that to avoid the fact that I saw you taking Diana from the bar home aren't you??”

Marjorie's cheeky grin grew, knowing she was playing a dangerous game with her colleague. It was so fun to poke the bear.

“Would you rather I had took you instead?~”

Autumn's smirk startles Marjorie, was she flustered? No. Of course not. She just wasn't expecting that. Marjorie stayed silent.

“That was a joke Marj. Plus, Diana was a one time thing”

“WHAT?? She was literally smoking hot, and I have met her before, she is lovely. What more could you ask for??”

Piercing looks were thrown Marjorie's way through an aggressive side eye. Was that her admitting something? Autumn had always suspected that Marjorie may like women, whether Marjorie knew it or not was the real question. She had to endure months of Marjorie complaining about how attractive Amelia was during her little spat with Charlotte, it seemed to be a real problem for Marjorie. Autumn couldn't disagree with her but it grossed her out to hear that said about someone she had considered a sister at some point. To her, Amelia was a goblin who deserved to live under the bridge near a local pub.

“If you like her so much, you can have her Marjorie.”

Marjorie was taken back by this comment, she was simply complimenting the lovely girl Autumn had taken home the other night. That didn't mean she was interested in women. Surely Autumn didn't think she was. She was probably joking…..right?

“.... Well…I…uhm…W-what was so wrong with her then? hm?”

Marjorie pushed back, inquiring as to why such a stunning woman still didn't have Autumn wrapped around her finger.

"Diana, albeit…..amazing, is not the kind of girl I am looking for.....not the girl I am looking for"

Marj is taken back by this, questioning if Aut had really picked up on her previous comment about Diana being attractive, praying she didn't. She wonders if Aut has someone on her mind.

Could it be someone else at the nursery??

She pries, unlike Aut she is a very curious woman and will get answers. Aut ignores her for the most part and laughs listening to Marj's wild theories. Marj blushes at her laugh, she hasn't heard it before.

Aut notices the blushing and smirks, keeping the fact that she noticed it to herself. She will most definitely be bringing it up the next time they banter.

They both get back to work with a noticeable tension in the air. Marjorie can't work out what it is. There hadn't been tension in the room with them since Autumn was still in her villain era. This kind of tension felt different. They both felt oddly content in this silent tension. However, it was practically screaming the words they needed to hear but they were both completely unaware.
