The side of Hiccup that Astrid saw was a completely different side than the village saw. Usually that was because she saw the affectionate side of him, although the village would complain they saw too much of Hiccups affectionate side. However his loving, cuddly side was the only secret side she saw. She also was there for him when he was down. And the poor thing would get seriously down. He carried the weight of the village on his scrawny shoulders.

When he was younger he struggled. Seriously. He had no friends, his father disowned him on a daily basis. Somehow, Gobbers snarky comments were the nicest thing he heard day-to-day. Although his skills in the forge were never denied, no one dared to admit he had talent.

A secret he carried with himself was that he would hurt himself. It started with careless burns in the forge that went unnoticed by everyone since he went unnoticed by everyone in general.

But as he came familiar with how satisfying the release felt it became more intentional, and more frequent.

Meeting Toothless gave Hiccup a new way to express his emotions. Gaining friends and respect helped too.

The scars faded. Emotionally and physically.

(Recap done. Time skip to a bit after httyd 2)

Astrid woke to her boyfriends arms around her, she could tell he was still sleeping by his slow, deep breaths behind her.

His left hand wrapped gently around her waist. Her head lied on his right arm which was outstretched across the bed.

He was wearing a long sleeve tunic. She grabbed the fabric and pulled it back to kiss his skin.

She pulled at it slightly and kissed his wrist. She pulled it back more to kiss the rest of his arm when she noticed the burns and slices that littered his upper forearm and lower bicep. They weren't accidental. He was always burnt. Not like that. She continued her pattern and gently kissed his arm.

She pushed his sleeve back down and turned in his loose grip so her face was pressed against his chest.

The movement woke Hiccup. He kissed the top of her head. "Goodmorning, M'lady." He whispered.

"Goodmorning, babe." She whispered back. She couldn't ignore the feeling she had in the pit of her stomach. "What's going on love?" She placed her chin on his chest as he rolled flat on his back.

"What do you mean?" He asked, genuinly. He ran his fingers through her hair, his fingertips brushing her back lightly.

Astrid sighed. She placed her right hand over his heart. "Your arm, Hiccup." She bit her lip as she watched him understand. "I saw. What's going on?" He breathed uncomfortably.

She moved her hand to his cheek, gently pulling him to make eye contact with her. "I'm not mad. I'm not disappointed." She reassured him. "I love you, and I'm worried about you." She watched his face soften as he realized he wasn't in trouble. "So what's going on in the mind of Hiccup Haddock?" She tried to smile softly.

Hiccup sighed and avoided her eyes. "I'm fine. I don't want you to worry." He faked a smile.

"I always worry about you." She rubbed her thumb against his cheek.

They both lay silent for a minute.

"C'mon." She pushed the blankets back and left the bed. Hiccup followed her with his eyes, confused. "Sit up." She gestured gently towards a chair at his desk and then searched through a draw. He obliged nervously.
