“But why would you do that, Mom?”

Her eyes held a baffled expression and she was shrieking at the top of her lungs.

“What happened? I needed to know this. Don't overreact.” Her mom scuffed and shook her head.

“But why did you need to know this? I'm just 22 and marriage is the last thing on my mind. Rather, not on my mind at all.” She face palmed on her forehead.

“Because I need to find the right man who will take care of you when I am not around.” Her mother raised an eyebrow.

“Mom, why are you thinking such negative thoughts? You aren't going anywhere. Infact, we both are going to enjoy a super awesome life filled with the luxuries and treasures you can't even imagine.”

She hugged her mother tightly, to make up for her rudeness in the beginning. “Okay then, tell me what did the astrologer say?” She giggled, amused and annoyed at the same time.

“Oh really? And why should I tell you? Too bad that you don't believe in prophecies and predictions.” Her mother rolled her eyes and continued to knit the sweater. The wool was a bright orange shade, and she needed to get the sweater ready before the upcoming winter season.

“Really Mom? Are we going to keep secrets now? Her patience ran dry and she rolled her eyes and went back to her room to study.

“Ofcourse, now focus on your studies.” Her mother walked out of the room.

“Well I have consulted 3 astrologers and all of them said the same thing.”

She was speaking to her friend in a hush voice on the phone.

“Please don't tell anyone. Infact I have not even told my daughter all this. She will literally scold me so badly. She doesn't even like the mention of marriage or even the word ‘wedding’. She hates men to the core.” She was speaking softly so that no one heard her.

It's getting pretty cold these days. Autumn is autumning.

She got up from her studies to switch off the fan. The cool weather and the breeze blowing made her feel cold.

As soon as she switched off the fan, everything, and every sound of the house was audible to her.

She could hear her mother's conversation on the call, crystal clear.

Oh she is talking to her best friend again. There she goes. She must be complaining about me again.

She closed her book to pay more attention to her mother's voice.

“Oh no no, of course she is too young to get married. But I was just curious and worried about her future. She is so isolated and loves to live alone but she doesn't understand that everyone needs companionship at some point of time in their life.”

She could only hear her mother's part of the conversation, because she was already speaking so softly and nothing could be heard from the other end of the call.

“Yes, he told me that she will get married to someone whom she will know for years. And that she will prosper after marriage. And the guy will be a good guy from a good family. And she might meet him at her work place. He will be shifting overseas or going abroad when they meet for the first time. He will be around 3 years older than her. And she will have a happy marriage. I'm satisfied after hearing all this.”

Her imagination grew more interesting and she continued to listen keenly to her mother.

“But I am worried because the astrologers told me that she will get married next year. But she has not even completed her degree yet. How is that possible? And where can I find this guy? He told me that she hasn't met him yet. I'm worried about that part. And all this confusion led me to consult another astrologer again.”

She folded her hands in anticipation.

This is interesting. My mom doesn't tell me the details which I ought to know but shares them with someone else. Nice.

“Oh yes, yes, you're right. Sometimes we meet the person we are destined to be with at one time and then maybe the actual wedding will take place in the future. So that means that she will meet him next year? I'm even more curious now.”

Her mother continued to speak on the phone. There was no way she was disconnecting the call anytime soon.

“Oh, my daughter hates marriage. She says she will have a grand celebration of some sort and invite everyone to the wedding except the groom. She doesn't want to get married. She must want to adopt dogs and cats and live with them alone. But I need to entrust someone with her responsibility. Someone who can care for her and love her as much as I do. She's my darling and more dear to me than anything else. She's the reason I am alive.”

Now she was almost going to barge in front of her mother and catch her red handed. But she thought of listening more, wondering if there was more information that she needed to hear.

“Okay, talk to you later. It's dinner time and my daughter will come looking for me and might hear all this. Take care. Bye.” She finally hung up the call.

I'm going to take her lesson on this. Why is my mother obsessed with my marriage? I'm just a student right now.

But she changed her mind as soon as she saw her mother wall towards her with a smile, as if nothing had happened.

I'll take this secret with me to the grave. Never mind.

“Mom, let's have dinner together? Then I need to get back to my studies.”

Her mother nodded and joined her.

“Ridiculous”, she giggled.

“You decide to get paid consultations and waste your money on these? That too without even telling me. Mom, what's wrong with you?”

“Hear me out. This is my final decision. I am not getting married. Not anytime. Not anytime soon. Never probably.”

“What will you do in your old age? Play with your cats and dogs? Why don't you understand that you're such a messy derp and you need someone to take care of you, the way I do.”

Of course her anger was penting up inside her. Her nostrils were fuming now, but she tried her best to keep calm.

“Really? It would take some great and conceivable miracle for me to change my mind and convince me otherwise. For this is my final decision. I'm not getting married. Now please let me focus on my goals and ambitions and world domination. I want to leave a legacy behind.”

Her mother put her knitting yarn down, and looked at her with a stern face.

“You can do all that and more when you've he support of a good partner.”

“I don't need men.” She shrugged her shoulders.

“Said every hurt girl ever.” Her mother instantly retorted.

“But I don't trust them. They're such disappointments.” She held her head in her hands, clearly done with arguing.

“It's enough. Now we will discuss this later. I don't know how you got to overhear all this. Eavesdropping is such bad manners. I never taught you this.”

“Okay, sorry.” She raised her hands in protest.

“Good. Now we will discuss this later when the time comes. Go back to your studies and focus on your exams.” Her mother smirked.

“You're the one who deviated my focus in the first place!” She threw the pillow towards her mother who dodged it, and then picked up the same pillow and threw it back at her.

“Thank you very much.” She said sarcastically.

She then opened the textbook to revise again. It was going to be a long day indeed.

And an even longer night of anticipation and excitement and overthinking.
