Sapphire stood by the window of the penthouse, her fingers tracing the outline of the glass as the city below bustled with life. It felt like she was miles away from everything familiar, from the world she once thought she knew. The penthouse was silent, save for the faint hum of the air conditioning, a stark contrast to the storm of thoughts swirling in her mind. Every muscle in her body was tense, knowing that her life had been irrevocably altered after the conversation with Elias.

A knock on the door snapped her out of her thoughts. She turned, catching Elias's figure leaning against the doorway, his arms crossed over his chest, his dark eyes watching her with a calculated intensity. There was something about the way he stood, his presence commanding, as if the entire world revolved around his every decision. Sapphire could feel the weight of his gaze as he studied her, the sharpness of a predator sizing up its prey.

"Ms. Martin," Elias called out softly, but his tone carried authority. "Come. We have matters to discuss."

Sapphire hesitated for a brief moment before straightening her posture and walking toward him, her heels clicking against the marble floor. She felt his eyes follow her every step, but she didn’t flinch. She had already made up her mind to face this head-on, no matter the danger that lurked beneath the surface. There was no room for weakness, not anymore.

She followed Elias down the hallway. The air around them was thick with an unspoken tension, the weight of her recent decision pressing down on her. She had agreed to stay, but what did that truly mean? Could she trust Elias enough to keep her alive? And what of this bodyguard he mentioned? Would they protect her, or were they just another pair of eyes for Elias, someone to watch her every move and report back?

As they approached the large, oak double doors of his study, Elias’s hand hovered over the brass handle before he finally pushed it open. The room was bathed in the golden hues of the late morning sun, casting long shadows across the rich mahogany desk that dominated the space. Bookshelves lined the walls, filled with titles that hinted at a man well-read in both classic literature and the darker recesses of history. A fire crackled in the corner, despite the mild temperature, giving the room an almost oppressive warmth.

Sapphire stepped in, her eyes scanning the room cautiously. A man sat casually on the leather couch opposite the desk, his legs stretched out in front of him as though he had been waiting there for hours. He was tall, broad-shouldered, and just a few years older than Sapphire, with tousled brown hair and a charming, easygoing smile that put her slightly at ease. He didn’t have the same hardened, dangerous air that surrounded Elias. If anything, he seemed almost out of place in the room, like he had just come from a casual brunch rather than a meeting about life and death.

“Ms. Martin,” Elias said, his voice cutting through her thoughts, “this is Logan. He will be your bodyguard moving forward.”

Logan stood up, extending a hand toward Sapphire. “Logan Pierce. Nice to meet you, Ms. Martin.” His tone was friendly, his grip firm but not overly forceful.

Sapphire hesitated for a moment before shaking his hand. “Sapphire,” she replied softly, still feeling the weight of the room around her.

Logan tilted his head slightly, studying her with an expression that seemed both curious and reassuring. “You don’t have to worry, Ms. Martin. I am just here to make sure no one messes with you.” He smiled again, this time more warmly. “Think of me as your shadow, but the kind you won’t mind having around.”

Despite the attempt to lighten the mood, Sapphire’s unease didn’t dissipate. “And what if I don’t want a shadow?”

Elias, who had been observing the exchange in silence, stepped forward. “It is not a matter of want, it is a matter of necessity. You have chosen to stay in this world, and that comes with certain precautions.”
