The silence in the room was deafening, broken only by the faint hum of Sapphire’s own unsteady breathing. Hours had passed since Elias had stormed out, leaving her to grapple with the mess her life had turned into in a single night. The weight of his betrayal sat heavy in her chest. Who was he, truly? The man who had tenderly smiled at her, or the cold enigma who had brought her here?

Her mind reeled, each thought fighting to make sense of the chaos. Elias had promised protection, yet he had disappeared, leaving her vulnerable, and worse—she now knew the truth about him. She had believed in him, trusted him. But it was all a façade. A game he had played from the start.

The lights above her head, flickered once and then died, plunging the room into darkness. Sapphire froze, her senses on high alert. The oppressive quiet made every tiny sound thunderous—the faint creak of the door unlocking sent a shiver down her spine. She tried to steady her breathing, but panic twisted in her chest like a vice. The room, once filled with the tension of unspoken words, now seemed to pulse with a darker, more pressing threat. Her pulse quickened, and every shadow seemed to come alive, every sound amplified in the suffocating silence.

"Who is there?" she called out, her voice trembling despite her efforts to stay composed. Her fingers curled onto her lap, grounding herself, though the ominous presence creeping into the room felt like a storm about to break.

The silence stretched for a beat too long. A breath. Then, slow and deliberate, a set of footsteps began to approach. The sound was methodical, measured, the soft scuff of boots against the floorboards only making her heart race faster. She couldn’t make out the figure, but she didn’t need to see him to know something was wrong. Her entire body tensed as if it knew the danger long before her mind could catch up.

A hand reached out from the darkness, grabbing her arm with surprising force. Sapphire gasped, her body instinctively recoiling, but the touch was familiar, firm yet not cruel. Her heart skipped as she looked up, the air thick with the tension of their proximity.

"Elias?" she asked, her voice barely more than a whisper now, as though afraid to disturb the fragile thread of reality.

“Shh. Don’t make a sound,” Elias murmured, his voice low and urgent. There was something in his tone that made her freeze, a sharpness she hadn’t expected.

"What is going on?" Her voice cracked, and she winced at how small it sounded. Fear gnawed at her insides, an insidious, creeping feeling that made every part of her mind scream for answers.

"We need to leave. Now," he said, his hand tightening around her arm. There was no time for questions, no time for explanations—only the urgency of his voice and the terrifying implication of his words.

Before she could even protest, he tugged her along. His movements were swift, purposeful, but there was a strange tenderness to them, like a desperate need to protect. The familiar scent of him—cigarettes, something sharp and metallic—clung to the air as they moved through the darkened hallway. Sapphire could barely make out the outline of the walls, the moonlight outside casting faint shadows through the small windows.

"Where are you taking me?" she asked, her voice strained. Her mind was still clouded with confusion, and the only thing her senses could focus on was Elias and the nightmarish tension hanging between them.

"Out of here," Elias replied curtly, his grip not loosening. “Keep moving.”

Her steps faltered, but she forced herself to keep up, each footfall echoing ominously in the narrow hallway. Sapphire felt like a marionette being pulled along, her body following his lead, but her mind still clinging to a thousand unanswered questions.
