Sapphire had been home from the hospital for a few days now, but the weight of her recovery still hung over her like a shadow. The damage to her lung from the bullet was significant, and while she was strong-willed, the doctor had been clear—she couldn’t overexert herself. She was to rest, use an inhaler when needed, and let her body heal at its own pace.
Elias had taken it upon himself to make sure she followed the doctor’s orders to the letter. Every moment of every day, he was there, hovering protectively over her, ensuring she did nothing that might jeopardize her recovery. It was suffocating at times, and Sapphire could feel the walls closing in as the days stretched on. She had never been one to be coddled or held back, and now, it felt as though her independence was slipping through her fingers.
But today, Elias was busy in his study. His sudden meeting had kept him occupied for the past couple of hours, and she saw it as the perfect opportunity to break away, if only for a little while.
She slowly made her way to the kitchen, her steps cautious but determined. The sight of her inhaler on the table reminded her of the fragility of her situation, but she pushed the thought aside. She didn’t need to be reminded of her limitations.
As she reached for the wine, her fingers brushed against the cool bottle, and she hesitated for only a moment. She knew she shouldn’t drink it—her lungs were still healing, and the doctor had warned her about the strain—but the temptation was too strong. The feeling of being restricted, of being told what she could and couldn’t do, had built up a frustration inside her. So, with a quiet defiance, she poured herself a glass.
She leaned against the counter, the smooth glass in her hand as she stared out the window, lost in her thoughts. Her fingers traced the rim of the glass as she took a sip, the wine smooth on her tongue.
Footsteps echoed in the hallway, and her heart skipped a beat as the door to the kitchen opened. Elias stood in the doorway, his gaze drawn to her immediately, as though she were a magnet pulling him in. He drank in the sight of her, the curve of her body framed in the gentle light, her lips softened into a slight smile as she looked back at him. And then his eyes locked onto the glass of wine in her hand. His expression darkened as he took in the sight of her drinking, his protective instinct flaring up in an instant.
Without a word, he crossed the room, and before Sapphire could react, he took the glass from her hand. His fingers brushed against hers, a subtle but electrifying touch. He didn’t look at the wine, but instead met her eyes, his gaze hard yet gentle, filled with a mix of concern and something else—something she couldn’t quite name.
“You shouldn’t be drinking this,” he said softly, his voice firm but laced with a tenderness. “You are still recovering.”
Sapphire pouted, her lips pushing out in an exaggerated motion as she crossed her arms over her chest. “But I wanted it,” she mumbled, the soft defiance in her voice matching the expression on her face.
Elias couldn’t help but smile at her cute protest. His thumb gently brushed against her lips, his free hand finding its way to her cheek.
“You are not supposed to drink it. But…” He leaned in closer, his lips grazing against her ear, sending a shiver down her spine. “I suppose a kiss could make up for it.” His lips trailed down to her pouting mouth, capturing her lips in a kiss that was more tender than she had ever expected. A kiss that took away the bitterness of her small rebellion and replaced it with something warm and full of promise.
Sapphire melted into him, feeling the heat of his body, the urgency in his touch, and yet there was something so gentle in the way he kissed her. His hands cradled her face, pulling her closer, his thumb caressing the line of her jaw.
The air between them seemed to crackle with intensity. Her breath hitched as he moved closer, his hands finding her waist, lifting her effortlessly. With a smooth, almost possessive motion, he placed her down on the counter, positioning her in a way that made her heart race even faster.
Sapphire’s legs instinctively parted as he stepped between them, his presence overwhelming, his warmth engulfing her. His lips crashed against hers in a kiss so hungry, so intense, that she was momentarily lost to it. The kiss was a whirlwind—fast, desperate, like they both wanted to erase everything but this moment, this feeling. His tongue traced the shape of her lips before plunging deeper, claiming her with such force that her breath left her in a rush.
She gasped against him, feeling the rapid beat of her heart in her chest, her hands gripping his shoulders as if he was the only thing keeping her grounded. But it was too much. She could barely keep up with him, the intensity of his kiss leaving her dizzy, the heat between them building so quickly that she could hardly breathe.
Her chest tightened painfully. She tried to breathe, but there was no air. Desperation flashed in her eyes as she pushed him away with both hands, gasping for breath. “I- I can't b-breathe…” she managed to whisper, her voice barely audible, panic rising in her chest.
Elias froze, his face instantly transforming from heated desire to pure concern. His eyes widened as he registered her breathlessness. Without a second thought, he rushed to the side table where her inhaler rested, his steps hurried but careful.
“Stay with me, Sapphire,” he muttered under his breath, almost to himself, his voice laced with urgency. He returned to her side in an instant, as he gently cupped her face with one hand, guiding the inhaler to her lips with the other.
“Breathe, Sapphire." he commanded softly but firmly, his voice steady as he pressed the inhaler to her mouth. "Inhale, love. It's okay.” He rubbed her hair with the other hand, his touch soft but filled with an unspoken tenderness. She did as he said, taking a shaky breath as the medicine hit her lungs.
Slowly, the tightness in her chest loosened, and she felt the air fill her lungs again, her breath returning to normal. She exhaled in relief, her hand coming to her chest as she met his gaze.
“I am sorry…” she whispered, feeling a mixture of embarrassment and frustration. “I ruined the mood.” Her eyes were soft with regret.
Elias’s face softened, and he gently pushed a strand of hair away from her face. “No, love. Don’t apologize,” he said, his voice low and soothing, the edges of his earlier tension melting away. “You didn’t ruin anything. You are everything to me.” His words were simple, but they carried the weight of everything he felt for her.
He leaned in and kissed her forehead gently, his lips lingering there for a moment before he pulled her into his arms, holding her tightly against him. She nestled into him, her body relaxing as his warmth surrounded her.
Elias exhaled slowly, a mixture of relief and something deeper in his eyes. “You scared me,” he confessed quietly, his arms tightening around her. “Don’t ever do that again.”
Sapphire smiled softly, her fingers brushing the side of his jaw. “I won’t. I just…” She paused, her voice growing tender. “I didn’t want to be the one holding us back. But I don’t want to lose you either.”
Elias’s hand cupped her cheek, his thumb brushing over her lips as he looked at her with a mixture of adoration and desire. “You will never lose me, Sapphire. I will make sure of that.”
And in that moment, the world around them seemed to fade, leaving only the two of them—wrapped in each other's arms, their hearts beating in sync. The air between them was still heavy with unspoken desire, but now, it was tempered with an unbreakable connection. The tension from earlier seemed to have settled into something deeper, something lasting.
He leaned in again, this time slower, more deliberate, as if savoring every second of the closeness. When his lips met hers again, it wasn’t frantic or desperate. It was tender, sensual, and filled with a promise—one that neither of them needed to say out loud.
The kiss deepened, slow and sweet, the passion building once again but in a more measured way, as if they were both learning how to navigate the delicate balance between desire and care. As their bodies pressed closer, as their hands roamed in familiar, possessive ways, they both knew that nothing would ever be the same. They were bound by something much stronger than just desire—they were bound by trust, by a deep, unspoken understanding that no matter the danger, no matter the challenges, they would always find their way back to each other.
