The car ride was cloaked in a tense silence, an oppressive weight that pressed on Sapphire's chest with each passing minute. She sat rigidly in her seat, still reeling from the chaotic events that had transpired in the restaurant. Her eyes were fixed on the blur of city lights outside, avoiding any glance at Elias, who maneuvered the car with an unsettling calmness. She longed to scream at him, to demand answers for dragging her into this nightmare, but fear clamped down on her voice, rendering her mute.
The image of the man's lifeless body lingered in her mind like a haunting specter, the blood pooling on the restaurant floor a vivid reminder of the horror she had just witnessed. A shudder coursed through her, fingers gripping the edge of her seat so tightly that her knuckles turned white. How could he remain so composed? So unruffled by the chaos that had unfolded?
As if sensing her unease, Elias finally broke the silence, his voice low and controlled. "You are shaking."
Sapphire didn't respond. What was she supposed to say to that? Of course, she was shaking. She had just witnessed a murder-Elias's murder, committed with chilling ease, as though it were nothing more than a routine action. The more she thought about it, the more suffocated she felt.
"Do you want to talk about it?" Elias asked, his eyes flicking over to her for a moment before returning to the road ahead.
Sapphire scoffed quietly, but her voice was barely above a whisper when she replied, "Talk about what? How you just...killed someone?"
Elias remained unfazed, his expression unyielding. "I did what was necessary."
"Necessary?" she echoed, disbelief lacing her voice. "He was a person. A human being, Mr. Monroe."
"He was a threat," Elias said, his voice steady, unshaken. "And threats don't get second chances in my world."
"Your world...what do you mean?" Sapphire repeated bitterly, her voice tinged with anger and fear. "I am not part of this... this madness. So why-"
Elias didn't respond immediately, his gaze hardening as they approached his penthouse. "You have always been a part of it, Ms. Martin. You just didn't know it yet."
His cryptic reply sent a chill down her spine. She bit down on her lip, desperately trying to keep her emotions in check. The realization that Elias had been watching her-investigating her-left her feeling exposed and vulnerable in a way she hadn't felt before. She was trapped, ensnared in his world, and there was no way out.
When the car slowed to a stop at a red light, Sapphire's breath caught in her throat as she noticed they were heading away from her apartment. Panic surged through her, and she turned sharply to Elias. "What are you doing? Where are you taking me? I want you to drop me off at my apartment!"
Elias's expression remained calm, almost detached. "You are not going there tonight. There are more pressing matters to address."
"You can't just-" Sapphire began, but her voice trailed off as Elias's gaze met hers, icy and resolute.
The car pulled up in front of a towering building in the heart of the city, and Elias parked it in the underground garage of his penthouse building. He exited first, walking around to her side and opening the door for her. His gesture might have seemed gentlemanly in another context, but now it felt like another reminder of the control he wielded over her.
Sapphire hesitated, her hands trembling in her lap, before finally stepping out of the car. Her legs wobbled beneath her, the weight of the night threatening to buckle her knees. She forced herself to stand tall, even though every fiber of her being wanted to collapse and run away from all of this. But where could she run? Elias had eyes everywhere. He had made that clear.
