Sapphire recalled the way she had slipped out of the house, her every movement deliberate and quiet. The halls were still, and she had taken care not to make a sound. She hadn’t told Elias, hadn’t left a note—nothing to trace her absence, even after what happened before. Her pulse had quickened as she stepped into the cold night air, the weight of her decision pressing heavily on her. Meeting Ezra was a risk, but one she had to take, even if it meant defying Elias and the layers of security he had imposed.

Ezra’s words hung in the air, sharp and foreboding. We are being watched.

Sapphire's heart raced as she glanced around, searching the bustling street for any signs of danger. People moved about their lives, blissfully unaware, but to her, every shadow felt darker, every stranger more suspicious. Her instincts kicked in; years of dealing with high-stakes cases and dangerous clients had sharpened her survival skills. But this was different. This wasn’t just about legal battles or courtroom drama. This was life or death.

“Where do we go?” she asked, keeping her voice steady despite the storm raging inside her.

“To Sofia.”

As they slipped into a narrow alley, dim light cast elongated shadows that seemed to dance with foreboding. Ezra’s intense gaze darted around, muscles tense, his survival instincts on high alert. Sapphire felt a knot of anxiety twist in her stomach. This was real, they were being hunted.

They reached the hospital, the fluorescent lights buzzing overhead, stark and sterile. The familiar scent of antiseptic flooded her senses, grounding her in the reality of their situation. They navigated the bustling hallways, keeping their heads down, blending into the flow of medical staff and patients.

When they arrived at the patient care area, Sapphire's heart sank at the sight of Sofia, unconscious on the hospital bed, her face pale and fragile. A nurse moved to check her vitals, and Sapphire seized the opportunity to speak with the doctor nearby.

“We need to transfer her to another hospital. It is not safe here for her anymore,” Sapphire said, urgency lacing her tone.

The doctor looked at her, concern furrowing his brow. “But she needs rest and care here, Ms. Martin.”

Sapphire leaned in, her voice barely a whisper but full of urgency. “Doctor, you know there are people after her. We can’t stay here. Please, you have to trust me.”

The doctor hesitated, his brow furrowed with concern, but after a long moment, he nodded. “I will arrange for her transfer. But it has to be done carefully. No mistakes.”

“Thank you,” Sapphire exhaled, a rush of relief flooding through her. She returned to Sofia’s side, gently smoothing her hair away from her face, her heart heavy with the weight of the sedative that kept Sofia unconscious. “I will keep you safe, I promise.”

As she prepared for the transfer, the door suddenly creaked open. Ezra stepped in, his eyes scanning the room with sharp focus. “We need to move now,” he said, his voice laced with tension. “They will be here any time.”

Sapphire nodded quickly, her adrenaline surging as her mind raced. “The doctor is making arrangements. We can move her when it is ready.”

Ezra’s eyes narrowed, his jaw tight. “No time for that. We leave now. They will find us before we are ready.”

Sapphire’s pulse quickened, the gravity of the situation sinking in. “You are right,” she said, her voice steady but with an edge of panic. “We can’t stay here for too long. I will get her ready for transport.”

As she adjusted Sofia’s bed and moved toward the door, every second felt like a ticking bomb. “Ezra, we have to move now.”

Ezra was already out the door, his figure disappearing into the shadows. Sapphire wheeled Sofia’s bed toward a side entrance, her heart pounding in her chest. The hallway was empty, eerily so. Too quiet.
