The Parkview Hotel Ballroom gleamed with the kind of opulence that seemed almost out of place in Sapphire Martin’s life. She was used to a simpler, more grounded existence—courtrooms, case files, and her small but tidy apartment. But this… this was a different world. The chandeliers dripped with crystals, casting a golden glow over the sea of sharply dressed attendees. Waiters glided between clusters of guests, offering champagne and appetizers on silver trays. The air hummed with the soft murmur of conversations, laughter, and the tinkling of glasses.

Sapphire took a deep breath as she stood near the entrance, trying to shake off the unease that had settled in her stomach the moment she had stepped out of the car. She had dressed for the occasion—a sleek red gown that hugged her frame, paired with simple jewelry that hinted at elegance without overstatement. But even in the finest clothes, she couldn’t shake the feeling that she didn’t quite belong here. Not in his world.

Elias Monroe had invited her to this event, and although the invitation had been vague, she knew it wasn’t a coincidence. He wanted something from her. What, exactly, remained unclear.

For the past week, her thoughts had been consumed with the possibilities. Why had he sought her out again after their brief encounter? She didn’t know enough about Elias to understand his motivations. But one thing was certain: he was a man who played his cards close to his chest, revealing only what he wanted others to see.

Her eyes scanned the room, searching for him. A part of her wanted to spot him immediately, while another part of her wasn’t quite ready to face him again. Her pulse quickened at the thought of their last meeting—the way his eyes had lingered on her, the quiet authority he exuded. Elias Monroe was dangerous, that much was clear. But there was something else about him that had stayed with her, something that tugged at her curiosity despite her better judgment.

She moved further into the ballroom, the soft click of her heels barely audible over the hum of the crowd. As she made her way through the throng of people, she couldn’t help but notice the attention she was receiving. Men and women alike turned to glance at her, their eyes lingering just a little too long. It was the kind of gaze that made her skin prickle, a mixture of curiosity and judgement. She wasn’t sure if it was her appearance or the fact that she was an unfamiliar face in a crowd of elites, but she felt like she was being scrutinized.

She reached for a glass of champagne from a passing waiter, grateful for something to do with her hands. Taking a sip, she let the bubbles fizz against her lips, her gaze drifting over the room again. And then, she saw him.

Elias Monroe stood near the back of the ballroom, a glass in his hand, surrounded by a small group of men. Even from a distance, he was unmistakable. His tall, imposing figure cut a striking silhouette against the backdrop of the glittering ballroom. He wore a tailored black suit that was effortlessly elegant, his dark hair slicked back, and his expression unreadable. But what struck her most was the way he seemed completely at ease in this world of power and wealth, as if he belonged here in a way that others didn’t.

As if sensing her gaze, Elias’s eyes flicked up and locked onto hers. The moment their eyes met, Sapphire felt a jolt of electricity run through her. His gaze was intense, unwavering, and for a brief moment, the noise of the room seemed to fade into the background. It was just the two of them, connected by an invisible thread that neither of them fully understood.

He excused himself from the group and began walking toward her, his movements smooth and purposeful. As he approached, Sapphire straightened her posture, trying to steady her breathing. She wasn’t sure why, but something about his presence made her feel exposed, as if he could see through the layers she kept carefully constructed around her.

When he finally stopped in front of her, Elias gave her a small, polite smile. “Ms. Martin,” he greeted her, his voice low and velvety. “I am glad you could make it.”

Sapphire returned his smile, though hers was more guarded. “I wasn’t sure if I should,” she replied honestly, her eyes searching his face for any hint of his intentions.

Elias raised an eyebrow, his smile widening ever so slightly. “But curiosity won, didn’t it?”

She took another sip of her champagne, using the moment to gather her thoughts. “You have been rather elusive about the purpose of this invitation.”

Elias tilted his head slightly, his eyes gleaming with amusement. “Must there always be a purpose?”

“In my experience, there usually is,” she countered, not willing to back down.

He chuckled softly, the sound sending a shiver down her spine. “You are not wrong,” he admitted, his gaze lingering on her for a moment longer before shifting to the crowd. “But tonight is simply an evening of introductions. No hidden agendas, I assure you.”

Sapphire wasn’t convinced, but she played along. “Introductions to whom?”

Elias gestured subtly to the room around them. “To people who matter. People who shape the world we live in. This is an opportunity, Ms. Martin. To be part of something larger.”

Sapphire glanced around the room, taking in the wealth and power that radiated from the attendees. This wasn’t just a social gathering; it was a display of influence, of people who pulled the strings behind the scenes. And Elias was at the center of it all, the man with the most power in the room.

“What makes you think I want to be part of that?” she asked, her voice quieter now, but no less firm.

Elias’s eyes returned to hers, and for a moment, she saw something in them—a flicker of interest, of recognition. “Because you wouldn’t be here if you didn’t.”

The words hung between them, heavy with unspoken meaning. Sapphire wanted to deny it, but the truth was, she was intrigued. Elias represented something unknown, something that both fascinated and unnerved her. And despite the warning bells ringing in her mind, she couldn’t help but feel drawn to him.

Before she could respond, a voice interrupted them. “Monroe, you are in high demand tonight.”

Sapphire turned to see a tall man approaching, his sharp suit and confident swagger marking him as someone important. He gave Sapphire a brief, appraising glance before turning his full attention to Elias.

Elias’s expression didn’t change, but there was a subtle shift in his demeanor. “Excuse me for a moment, Ms. Martin,” he said smoothly, giving her a slight nod before stepping away with the other man.

Sapphire watched him go, her mind still racing with questions. What was she doing here? What did Elias really want from her? And more importantly, why did she feel so unsettled, yet so inexplicably drawn to him?

She took another sip of champagne, trying to calm the fluttering in her chest. But as she stood alone in the ballroom, she couldn’t shake the feeling that something was happening, something just beneath the surface that she couldn’t quite see.

And then, from across the room, she felt it—a presence, watching her. It wasn’t Elias, but someone else. Someone hidden in the shadows.

She scanned the crowd, but whoever it was had already disappeared into the throng of people. Sapphire’s heart quickened, a sense of unease creeping up her spine.

She was being watched. And she had a feeling it wasn’t just Elias who had taken an interest in her.
