Katrina : "No shit dude, you just realized that? Call me when you wake up. Smh"

Sam stared at the text, confused as hell. 'What did Kat mean by that. How did she know? What was she even saying.' Sam's thoughts filled his brain as he propped himself up on his bed.

He decided he would call her, only after he changed. He didn't want to shower. Not after last time. So he just pulled some sweat pants on and put on a shirt he found, in the scattered clothing, on the floor. He played with his hair a bit, brushed his teeth and such. Before sighing and resuming his place on his bed.

Calling : Katrina

"Hey Sam!"  A familiar voice echoed through the speaker. Sam sighed, taking in her sweet voice carefully.

"Hey Kat. Uhm... you told me to call you?" Sam asked, a slightly sour taste in his mouth when he said her name.

"Yeah! So, you finally realized your in-love with Colby!" She said, the slyness evident in every word.

"No. I just... I love him... a lot. That doesn't mean I'm in-love with him." He said, fumbling through his words, trying to think of a better excuse.

"So you're still being oblivious. Oh my gosh Sam. Do you even know why we broke up?" She asked, her voice breaking Sam.

Sam thought about it, because he wasn't ready to settle down, and they wanted to do separate things. Right? That's what he thought at least.

"Because... 'cause, I wasn't ready, we wanted different things... right?" Sam's voice lingered in the air a bit, worried about Kat's next words.

"Well, yes... but I knew you could never love me as much as you loved Colby. It would always be him over me. You would always go to him first. You would always be there for him, even before me. And I knew you loved him more. More than even you realized. I knew that I didn't want to be second to him in everything. I just... I want you to at least acknowledge something I've always known."

Kats words burned Sam's heart. The fact that he had made Kat feel like she was less important than his best friend. The fact that he knew, in the back of his mind, that she was right. That she could never be as important as the boy he met in his freshman year. The boy he loved.

"But... I... loved you. I was in-love with you!" Sam spoke weakly, his mouth quivering as he tried not to cry.

"Not as much as him. No matter what you think. I know. You love him. More than you know." Kat said, sympathy echoing through the phone.

He sat there, thinking through the thoughts, knowing what Kat was saying was true. He just couldn't believe he loved his best friend, more than he had ever loved his ex-girlfriend. He heard Kat talking more, but he never processed those words, he still couldn't process her previous words.
