The Quiet Fade

I used to run with winds that sang,
A body strong, a spirit rang,
But now the days stretch long and slow,
Where once was light, the shadows grow.

Each breath once full now feels so thin,
A battle fought I cannot win,
Bones once steady, now they shake,
Dreams dissolve like ripples break.

The mirror shows a face I know,
But dimmed, the years begin to show,
And though the will to fight remains,
The body's frail, it bears the strains.

I mourn the strength that slipped away,
Like sunlight fading from the day,
Yet still, in heart, a fire burns,
A quiet hope that health returns.

But if it doesn't, if it fades,
I'll cherish every step it gave,
For even in the slowing stride,
I find the strength to hold my pride.
