The morning sun illuminated the Red Keep's outer courtyard. Vaella stood on the castle's steps, alongside her children and siblings as they waited for the wheelhouse to return from the dragonpit. Her fingers tangled in front of her, picking at the green fabric of her skirts. A hand took her own, stilling her nervous fidgeting. She glanced at Otto, spotting the anxiety she felt in his worried gaze. She turned back, taking a deep breath as a carriage entered the courtyard, rolling to a top in front of the stairs.

"Princess Maelora of House Targaryen." A knight announced as Mae exited the carriage

Mae swallowed deeply as she moved towards the steps, looking up at her family with red-rimmed eyes. "Your Grace."

Vaella rushed down the steps before another word was said, crashing into her daughter's arms. The young girl melted into her mother's embrace, gripping tightly at her. Vaella pulled back cupping Mae's face in her hands

"I know, sweet girl. I know." Her thumbs caressed Mae's cheeks, wiping away the tears that fell.

"I should have been her. I could have-"

"There was nothing you could have done." Vaella comforted her, leaning closer to press a kiss to her head of auburn curls.

"Why? Why was he..." Mae's voice trailed off, unable to speak the cruel fate her brother had met.

"Retaliation for Lucerys."

"Luke is dead?" Hazel eyes drifted past Vaella, narrowing at the one-eyed man. She stepped out of her mother's embrace and moved to the steps.

"Mae, I-" Aemond began.

Her hand lashed out, striking his chest. "How dare you?" She continued swatting at him, uncaring of how she looked to onlookers. "You swore!"

Aemond caught the wrist of the hand that had landed on his chest, holding it tightly as he caught the other. "It was an accident," He tried to reason with her, tugging her closer to him. "I'm sorry."

She stared back at him before ripping herself out of his hold and storming into the castle.

"Mae!" Aella called, running after her sister.

The rest followed after the angered girl, leaving Vaella and Aemond alone in the courtyard. The Queen slowly approached her younger brother, pressing a hand to his shoulder.

"She'll forgive you." Vaella assured.

He nodded, desperately holding onto the promise as he watched his only friend leave him behind. Aemond took her arm in his and led her into the Keep. He was unsure if he did so out of respect and care for Vaella or if it was his aching need to feel the warmth she exuded.
