SUMMER OF 2018

• • •

Xia heard the back porch door open, the sound of music playing on a speaker mixed with light laughter and chatter filled the quiet space for a brief moment.

"Hey," his familiar voice warmed up the brisk summer night air.

She turned her head to see him slowly make his way over to her. Even in a pair of dark washed jeans and a large hoodie he looked good.

"You alright? You've been quiet all night."

It was much like Chenle recently to check in on her, even when he had someone else waiting for him.

The girl went back to leaning on the railing, staring up at the stars. "I'm fine, just tired."

"They got you working hard at Mrs. Li's?" He teased.

"Oh yeah, we're learning how to dress properly for a ball. Does anyone even still do balls anymore?"

"I think that's just a fancy party," Chenle said with a laugh. "Here."

The fabric hung loosely on her shoulders, his scent taking over her sense of smell. His hoodies were always the warmest, or perhaps that's just how they felt to her.

She knew he was standing close to her, closer than he should be.

"It's cold," he simply stated, now leaning on the railing as well.

The boy had a sweet smile on his face as he looked her in the eyes. Her heart started to beat erratically.

"Where's Yizhuo?" The question slipped out of her mouth as if on instinct. She couldn't help but wonder.

If it weren't for the subtle falter in his facial expression, she'd believe that the mention of the other girl had no effect on him.

But it did.

"She's passed out upstairs with Minjeong. I just checked on her." His face turned to look at the dark lake, moonlight reflecting on the still body of water. "Where's Mingi?"

It was clear that he didn't actually care where the other boy was, he only wanted to return the same attitude Xia seemingly had.

The girl didn't falter.

"At home," she lied through her teeth. She had no idea where he was, nor did she care.

All that mattered was that any mention of him seemed to bother the boy next to her, and that was enough for her.

"What? He couldn't make it?" Chenle tauntingly asked, turning his face to get closer to hers.

His eyebrows were raised and the hint of a smile could be seen on his lips.

"Something like that," she replied in a dull tone.

He scanned her face for a moment, taking in her expression. She was upset.

"You want to go for a walk?"
