EARLY SUMMER OF 2019

"Thank you," Mark replied to the waiter with a smile once he was done taking their order.
His focus then landed back on the two exchange students he'd taken under his wing for the past couple of days.
It was the first time he'd actually hung out with them alone. He chose a local Korean restaurant, hoping that one of the staple cuisines of Neo City would make them feel a little less homesick.
The conversation flowed freely between the three. Sungchan was grateful to have someone to speak Korean with, and Chenle, being practically fluent in the language by that point, made things easier.
A sudden burst of muffled laughter came from one of the nearby tables garnering the attention of the three boys.
A small group of girls that had to be around the same age were giggling and whispering while looking over at the boys' table.
Mark's cheeks began to turn a light pink out of embarrassment, an uneasy smile on his face as the three exchanged glances.
He told himself that the girls' behavior was not towards him but rather the two other boys, who were still clad in their suit and ties from their morning 'class'.
It made him less nervous.
"Should we... do something about that?" He asked the other two, wondering if they were the type to casually flirt with girls.
Guys of their background were still a mystery to him.
Chenle took a sip of his beverage. "I'm good," he said simply. "But I don't know about Sungchan."
The other boy was already smiling at the girls, giving them a small wave.
The group erupted into excited squeals and loud shushes, almost — but not quite — causing a scene.
"If you'll excuse me boys, I believe there is a group of ladies that are in desperate need of attention," Sungchan stood up from his spot, removing his suit jacket.
"Wow, what a hero," Chenle poked fun at him causing Mark to laugh.
Sungchan gave Chenle a small shove and made his way over to the girls' table, pulling up a chair. He tried his best in his broken English to get the girls to laugh.
"And what about you Chenle? You don't care to join?" Mark asked the boy, a teasing smile on his face.
Chenle only shrugged in response. "I'm not interested."
Mark shifted in his seat. "Are they... not... your type?"
The question sounded odd to Chenle's ears. Mixed with the uneasiness that was clear on the other's face, he quickly understood his meaning.
"No," he clarified immediately. "I'm not..."
"I got you. I got you," Mark assured Chenle. "You have a girl back home?"
