"Katerina, can you come down here for a minute?" Mom called from downstairs.
"I'll be down in a minute," I called back.
I scribbled down the answer to the last math problem before I closed my textbook and notebook. I slid off my bed and exited my room. I went downstairs and I heard Mom moving around in the kitchen so that's where I go.
Upon entering the kitchen, I saw her removing the tea kettle from the stove. Her eyes landed on me, and she smiled. "Go ahead and have a seat at the table. I'll bring your tea to you."
I did as she asked, and I watched as she poured the steaming hot water into each teacup. A sweet, fruity scent made its way to my nose, and I have an idea of the exact tea she prepared. She put the tea kettle back on the stove and walked over to the table with both cups. She sat one in front of me and placed the other across from me and took a seat.
"I made your favorite," she said with a smile. "I'll never understand why white tea is your favorite."
"It relaxes me the most, plus it tastes good," I explained simply. I blew on the tea before taking a small sip. "Is this about yesterday?"
Mom knew I was never one to beat around the bush. I liked getting straight to the point.
"Yes. Although, you seem to be in better spirts today compared to yesterday, but you still look a little troubled."
Even though I had that talk with Eliana, I still hadn't been able to shake the thought of my birth parents and the mysterious wolf from my mind. The whole idea of them using the mysterious wolf to reach out to me still upset me and pissed me off at the same time. It just continued to make me feel unwanted. Was there something wrong with me?
"Do you and Dad ever regret adopting me?"
Her eyes widened, and she quickly shook her head. "Of course not, sweetie. Why would we ever regret adopting you?"
I sighed heavily. "I just...I feel like I don't deserve your kindness. I've put you and Dad through so much with my reckless behavior throughout the years."
Everyone in River Valley knew who I was, knew what I've done. I wasn't a stranger to receiving scathing looks whenever I was in town. I could hear all the horrible things being whispered about me when I walked by. I was the most hated individual in this town, but I didn't care. They weren't important to me. My friends and family were all I needed. They were the only ones I needed to care about.
But my behavior did cause my parents to get constantly harassed daily and I hated that. There wasn't a day that went by where they weren't told that they should've 'kept that monster at the orphanage.' Maybe they were right.
"You should've left me at the orphanage. I'm nothing but a burden."
"Don't say that. Don't you ever say that, Katerina," she said in a soft but stern tone. "You are not a burden, you hear me? If I had the choice to go back and pick between you and another child at the orphanage, I would always pick you and so would your father. We love you, Katerina. You are our greatest treasure. Always remember that, okay?"
After hearing her speak so passionately, how could I even think she or Dad didn't love me? How could I think she would tell me something different? They weren't my birth parents, and I had to remember that. I just needed some reassurance, for someone to tell me that they cared.
"Thanks, Mom. I really needed to hear that. It's just, since yesterday, I started feeling unwanted and felt like no one cared when I should know that isn't true," I admitted. I took another sip of my tea. "I'm sorry."
