Y/N sat on the grass, tying her shoelaces as the rest of the team finished up their drills. Training was over, but Kyra Cooney-Cross had invited her to stay back and practice a bit longer. Kyra had always been full of energy—running drills, perfecting her shots, and pushing herself far beyond what the coaches asked. It was one of the things Y/N admired about her, and probably why they'd grown so close off the field.
"Hey, you ready?" Kyra's voice snapped Y/N out of her thoughts. She looked up to see Kyra jogging over, hair pulled into a messy bun and a smirk on her face that made Y/N's stomach flip.
"Yeah, let's do it," Y/N replied, getting to her feet.
They spent the next hour passing the ball back and forth, racing each other, and occasionally breaking into fits of laughter over inside jokes that only they seemed to understand. By the time they were done, the sun was setting, casting an orange glow over the empty field.
Kyra plopped down on the grass, breathing hard but smiling. "You're getting quicker," she teased, nudging Y/N with her knee.
Y/N rolled her eyes, sitting down beside her. "Or maybe you're just getting slower," she shot back, earning a playful shove from Kyra.
Their banter was easy, natural. It always had been. But lately, there had been moments between them that felt like more than just friendship—lingering touches, loaded glances, and conversations that tiptoed around something neither of them was ready to name. Tonight was no different. They sat close, shoulders brushing, and the charged silence between them was almost palpable.
"Hey," Kyra said suddenly, her voice softer than usual. "Do you ever feel like... like sometimes you just need something, but you're not sure what it is?"
Y/N turned to look at her, surprised by the vulnerability in Kyra's eyes. "Yeah," she admitted. "I think everyone feels that way."
Kyra bit her lip, her gaze dropping to Y/N's mouth for a split second before meeting her eyes again. "I don't want to complicate things, but... I like being around you. And I think you like being around me too."
Y/N's heart skipped a beat. She knew where this was going, had sensed it for weeks now. "I do," she said carefully, searching Kyra's face. "But what are you saying?"
Kyra hesitated, as if choosing her words carefully. "I'm saying... maybe we could have something. Nothing serious, no strings. Just... fun." She let out a breath, looking a little uncertain for the first time. "Friends... with benefits?"
Y/N's mind raced. She'd thought about Kyra like that before—wondered what it would be like to cross that line—but hearing Kyra suggest it made everything feel real. And risky. But also incredibly tempting.
"You sure about that?" Y/N asked, her voice low.
Kyra nodded. "Yeah. I mean, we're already close, and I don't want to mess that up. But I think we could make this work, you know? As long as we keep it simple."
Simple. Y/N wasn't sure anything about Kyra was ever simple, but she couldn't deny the attraction, the thrill of doing something they weren't supposed to. She leaned in a little closer, testing the waters. "And what happens when it stops being simple?"
Kyra's smile was almost wicked, her confidence returning. "Then we'll figure it out. Together."
The tension between them snapped, and before Y/N could overthink it, she closed the distance, pressing her lips to Kyra's. It was messy and rushed, the kind of kiss that came from weeks of pent-up feelings finally spilling over. Kyra responded instantly, her hand finding the back of Y/N's neck and pulling her closer.
When they finally pulled apart, they were both breathless, cheeks flushed. "Wow," Kyra murmured, her thumb brushing Y/N's jaw. "This... this is gonna be fun."
Y/N chuckled, still feeling the heat of the kiss on her lips. "Yeah, it is."
They didn't talk about it after that. No rules were set, no promises made. They just got up, collected their things, and walked off the field together, side by side, as if nothing had changed. But everything had.
And for now, that was enough.
