The sun was setting over London Colney, casting a golden glow on the training pitch. Leah Williamson wiped the sweat from her brow and glanced around at her teammates, the familiar faces of her Arsenal family. But there was an absence that still echoed...the absence of Vivianne Miedema.
Leah wasn't the only one feeling it. Stina Blackstenius stood by the goalpost, catching her breath, while Caitlin Foord and Katie McCabe passed the ball between them. The unspoken truth was there in the space left behind, in the way they all seemed to push harder during practice, as if to compensate for the gap in the squad.
"Ready for another round, Le?" Lotte Wubben-Moy jogged over, her breath steady despite the grueling session. Her easy smile softened the tension in the air, but Leah could still see the determination in her eyes.
Leah returned the smile and nodded. "Always."
As the whistle blew, the session resumed, but it wasn't just about training anymore. There was a new energy coursing through the team. Alessia Russo, darted forward, catching a perfect pass from McCabe. She weaved through the defense effortlessly, her movements fluid yet sharp. Alessia had been with them for quite a while now, but she had onmy started to gel with the squad, bringing her own fire to the front line.
"Let's go, Lessa!" Katie shouted from behind, clapping her hands together.
Alessia drove the ball toward goal, her focus unwavering. The defenders closed in, but she danced between them, cutting left, then right, before unleashing a shot that sailed past the keeper and smacked into the back of the net.
Cheers erupted from the team. Russo turned, her grin wide, and Leah couldn't help but laugh as she jogged over to celebrate with her.
"Not bad for the blondie," Caitlin teased, pulling Alessia into a playful hug.
Alessia shrugged, still catching her breath. "Just trying to keep up with you lot."
Lotte joined the group, panting but smiling. "I think you're doing more than just keeping up."
As the players regrouped for the final drill, Leah found herself standing next to Kim Little, the veteran presence whose quiet leadership had always anchored the team. Kim gave her a knowing look, her eyes reflecting the weight of the season ahead.
"We've got a lot to prove this year," Kim said softly, her voice steady. "But we're ready."
Leah nodded, glancing at her teammates the new faces like Alessia and the familiar ones like Lotte, Caitlin, and Katie. It was a different Arsenal now, but change wasn't something to fear. It was something to embrace.
"We'll make our mark," Leah agreed. "Together."
Kim gave a slight smile. "Together."
As the whistle blew for the end of the session, the players began to disperse, but there was a feeling of unity lingering in the air, a sense that this was a new chapter, one they would write together.
And though Vivianne was no longer with them, her legacy remained. Arsenal would always be a team of fighters, and this new dawn felt like the start of something even bigger.
