Beth Mead sat in the Arsenal locker room, staring blankly at her boots. The room was quiet, but her mind wasn't. Vivianne Miedema, her girlfriend and partner on and off the pitch, was leaving. It still didn't feel real.
Katie McCabe walked in, tossing her bag into her locker with a heavy sigh. She glanced at Beth, noticing the way her shoulders slumped, her usual spark dimmed. Katie didn't do soft or sentimental often, but Beth was her friend and she hated seeing her like this.
"Hey," Katie said, sitting down next to her. "You alright?"
Beth didn't respond immediately, just fidgeted with the laces of her boots, her fingers trembling slightly. Katie nudged her shoulder.
"Beth."
Finally, Beth sighed, her voice low. "Viv's leaving, Katie. I know it's what she needs, but... it's hard, you know?"
Katie nodded, her eyes softening. "Yeah, I know. It's rough."
Beth leaned back against the wall, her eyes unfocused. "I've been playing with her for so long. We've been through everything together. Now she's going, and it feels like... like everything's changing."
Katie tilted her head, considering her words carefully. "Viv's one of the best, no doubt. But this isn't the end of the world, you know? People leave, come and go-it's football. But you two? You've got something bigger than that."
Beth swallowed, her eyes glistening. "I know. It's just-it's not just about football. It's about... us. Being around each other every day, supporting each other. What if it's harder when she's gone?"
Katie sighed and placed a hand on Beth's knee. "Look, I won't pretend it'll be easy. But Viv's still going to be there for you. Just because she's leaving Arsenal doesn't mean she's leaving you."
Beth nodded slowly, her gaze dropping to the floor. "Yeah, you're right. I just-I'm going to miss her, you know?"
Katie squeezed her knee. "Of course you will. But you're Beth Mead. You've got this. Viv's going to smash it wherever she goes, and you'll keep smashing it here. And hey, it's not like we're losing you, right?"
Beth finally cracked a small smile, appreciating Katie's tough-love approach. "Thanks, Katie."
Katie grinned and stood up, clapping Beth on the shoulder. "No worries. Now come on, get your head up. Viv would want you to focus and do what you do best. We've got a game to win."
Beth nodded, feeling a little lighter. "Yeah. You're right."
As Katie walked away, she turned back with a smirk. "Besides, distance might suck, but it's not going to stop you two. Arsenal or not, Viv's still your girl."
Beth chuckled, a real smile breaking through this time. "Yeah. She is."
