Remi's POV
We manage to find the rest of the Hermes cabin and follow them down to the dining pavilion. It's made up of stone tables, topped with white table cloths and lined with an array of food which looks like it's from a BBQ. The benches seem to fill up fast around certain tables but others seem to have loads of room.
"Why don't people just go sit over there?" I ask a who's boy about eleven.
"They can't," he answers, showing no sign of explaining further.
"You have to sit with your cabin, they're very strict about that," Percy tells me, coming out of nowhere.
"I'm guessing that bothers you?" I ask, noticing the way he looks over at the table full of Athena children. He nods and goes and sits at a table at the far end of the pavilion, on his own.
We make our way to Hermes table and sit at the opposite end, away from the other Hermes campers. We come to a unspoken agreement that we stay away from them and they stay away from us. Libby joins us at our end of the table and explains how camp works.
"... And every week we have a cabin inspection which is done by one of head counsellors," Libby explains, piling beef onto her plate. Olivia keeps asking questions being claimed and when it happens. She dying to find out who her parent is. However, I have no desire to find out which pompous goddess, who happens to think she owns the place, is my mother.
We are about to start when everyone stands up, taking their food to camp fire. "What's happening?" Macey asks, looking bewildered.
"You have to give a part of your meal as an offering to the gods," Libby informs, taking her plate over to the fire. I groan, following her. Anybody who knows me well, knows I don't share food.
The three of us walk over to the fire, each scraping the best part of our meal into it; the juiciest strawberry or the biggest slice of meat.
When it gets to me, I'm not paying attention to my surroundings.
"How are you liking camp?" Asks Tat from behind and I yelp in surprise. I throw my whole plate in and catch my hand in the flames. I swear under my breath, clutching my injured hand.
"You're only meant to put a small part of your meal in newbie!" Someone from the Aphrodite table yells, her and her friends laughing.
I yell something back but in a language I don't recognise. "Someone needs to wash your mouth out!" Tat marvels, understanding my comment. I mutter something even ruder to her under my breath.
I collect a new plate and replace the food which I 'threw' in the fire. The others are still laughing when I sit back down at the table. "It wasn't that funny!" I complain, starting on my mountain of food.
"I'm sorry Remi, it was," Liv laughs and I flick her in the head. About halfway through the meal, a boy, who looks about 18, walks over to us looking rather disheveled. Tat bursts out laughing and he just scowls at her.
"Get in fight with Juniper?" Tat practically cackles.
"I just said the blueberry bush was looking nice and BAM," he says, leaning on the table.
"Ha! That's priceless!" Tat sighs smiling. When she's our confusion, she introduces the boy. "Oh, sorry. Everyone, this Grover. Grover, meet the Brits."
"You're a Brit," Liv exclaims but Tat just ignores her.
"They're the ones I've been assigned to for past year," Tat explains further to Grover
"Oh, that's them!" Grover replies, appearing to have a moment of realisation. "Nice to meet you all."
I'm about to ask who his godly parent is when I notice his hooves.
"You're a saytar?" I wonder out loud.
"Yep, Tat's my half sister," he answers throwing an arm round her shoulder.
"Only half?" Macey asks, her fork halfway to her mouth.
"Oh, my dad's Hades, did I not say?"
"That explains a lot!" Liv exclaims and she took the words right out of my mouth.
The five of us are in an animated conversation until the end of the meal when we're called to the camp fire.
A huge fire pit is lit with flames reaching peaks of ten feet. When a group of girls about twelve walk past, the flames rise higher and brighter. But, when an arguing couple walk past the flames shrink and turn a dark, angry red. I'm just making my way towards the the rest of the Hermes cabin when someone bumps my shoulder accidentally.
"Sorry," He and I apologise at the same time and when our eyes meet, we're both lost for words.
His chocolate brown eyes stare into mine and I freeze. I mentally slap myself. I'm not the sort of person to get tongue tied just because a boy looked at me. He scans me, his red-brown hair flopping in his eyes, and he spots my hand.
"What d'you do to your hand?" He asks taking my hand in his.
"Burnt it," I reply, trying to keep my voice at it normal pitch.
"You the girl who threw her dinner in the fire? He asks me, a smile creeping across his face.
"Not on purpose," I complain and he laughs. I swear my heart quickens and cheeks go pink.
"Watch this," he says as closes his eyes in concentration.
A faint tingling sensation fills my hand and spreads to my fingertips. He opens his brown eyes and releases my hand. I stare in amazement.
It's healed! Completely healed! I look up at him, my amazement plastered across my face.
"How d'you that?"
"Blessed by Asclepius," he answers.
I smile at him and, I'm not sure if it's a trick of the light but his cheeks redden.
I walk away towards the camp fire and, before I'm lost in the crowd, the calls out to me.
"I don't know your name!"
"It's Remi, Remi Preece," I reply with a grin.
"I'm Nick, Nick Jakovenko, by the way," I calls out, wearing a grin similar to mine.
I smiled to myself and find a seat next Liv. She gives me a puzzled look, her eyes flitting between me and Nick. I just give her a look which could be interpreted in many different ways and turn to face Chiron, who's standing to face the group.
"Before we all enjoy another camp fire, I have an announcement to make," he begins.
"I would like to welcome our four new arrivals, Macey, Sara, Remi and Olivia."
He beckons us forward and we get nervously from our seats. Standing side by side, we face the camp before us, my hands shaking in my pockets.
"I would like to welcome and treat with respect no matter their godly parent," Chiron continues and someone from the back calls out.
"Who their parents?"
"Sara is a daughter of Ares," he explains. "Whilst the other three are unconfirmed."
Going very red in the face, I notice the other three, and the whole camp for that matter, staring at something above my head. I look up and a great, grey owl glowing brightly above my head.
"It appears I stand corrected," Chiron says, smiling at the now fading owl. "I can now tell you hat here we have Remi, daughter of Athena."
