Reaping day. Worst day of the year. Where a girl and a boy are picked from their district to try to survive the Hunger Games.
I move slowly, grabbing my light blue dress, putting on my makeup, and finding shoes that match my dress. One thing was on my mind... Cato.
I will admit it. I don't want him picked. He's one of my only friends. And I, no offence to Cato, but I don't think he would survive the Games.
"Are you ready, dear?" my mom asks. I nod. "Why don't I do your hair?" I nod again. She curls my hair and puts it in a neat ponytail, leaving two strands out, one on either side of my head. She smiles a watery smile. "Remember, I love you, dear." she whispers, her voice cracking a little bit. I smile at her through the mirror.
"I love you, too, Mom." I whisper back. She stands up and takes my hand in hers. I smile and follow her out the door.
At the table, a woman pricks my index finger, and places my finger on a piece of paper, then tells me to go. I walk over to where the 12 year old girls stand.
"Alright." is all I hear the girl with bright pink hair say. She babbles on eagerly about the Hunger Games, and how it was created. "Okay, ladies first!" she sticks her hand in and pulls out a piece of paper. "Lily Crane. Come on up." I tense up. Boys next. Please don't let Cato be picked. Please don't let him be picked. "Kolbie Oak." I let out sigh of relief. They shake hands and leave. I run off.
"Cato! Cato!" I shriek.
"Clove!" I hear him yell.
I run over to him and throw my arms around him. "Cato. I was scared you would be picked. I was scared." I whisper, shaking, trying not to cry.
"Shh. It's okay. It's over. Shh. We're safe." he whispers in my ear. I bury my face in his chest.
"I was scared." I whisper again.
"Shh. Calm down. It's okay." Cato whispers in my ear.
I look up and let go of him. "Sorry." I whisper.
He smiles and forgives me. He was wearing a black button up shirt and jeans. I ask him if his family wanted to celebrate with my family. He asks his mom. And she said yes. The adults talk for a for a while, then we go to my house. We have a delicious meal and lots of fun. Then it's time to say good bye.
"Cato..." I whisper.
"Yeah?" he says.
"Um... I'm glad your safe." I whisper, my face red.
His arms go around my body, and he puts his mouth by my ear. "I'm glad your safe to." he whispers. We stand there hugging each other for a while. Then it's time for him to go.
"Bye, Clove. See you tomorrow." Cato says.
"Bye." I say. Then I stop and think for a second. "Cato?"
He turns around. "Yeah?"
"Umm... Meet me at the big oak tomorrow." I say nervously.
"Sure thing." he says smiling.
"Bye." I whisper.
