As he read, James could almost feel Emma's desperation echoing through the pages. He knew he had to act fast to uncover the truth behind her disappearance.
Leaving the abandoned bookstore, he decided to visit Emma's family, hoping they might hold more answers.
When he arrived, Emma's stepmother, Victoria, answered the door, her face etched with worry. "Detective James, we're worried sick. Emma's father, Richard, is beside himself with grief."
James stepped inside, his gaze sweeping the room. Emma's fiancé, Alex, was pacing in the living room, his anxiety palpable. He noticed the tension crackling between Victoria and Alex, as if each was silently blaming the other. Richard stood nearby, frantic concern etched into his features.
"Have you found anything?" Richard asked, his voice trembling with hope.
James hesitated for a moment before sharing his discoveries, carefully omitting the darker, more sinister details that weighed heavily on his mind. He sensed the fragile state of the family and didn't want to add to their turmoil.
Victoria shifted nervously, wringing her hands. "Emma was researching her family history. Perhaps that's connected to her disappearance?"
Alex interjected, his voice sharp. "She became obsessed with that diary. I feared it was affecting her mental health. I tried to warn her, but she wouldn't listen."
James felt a tension in the air, an undercurrent of secrets that seemed to bind the family together yet pull them apart. He knew he needed to dig deeper.
