_________________________________________Author's POV
Jonathan noted, though fear still clawed at the edge of his mind, he censored himself, blocking out the shrinking walls, the shifting figures, the visions that tried to overwhelm him. Slowly, the figures began to fade, their forms growing weaker as Jonathan’s resolve solidified. The room quietened, the shadows retreating back into the walls. Though the air still hung with tension, at the center, Emma stood her chains gone but her body trembled from the ordeal, and her eyes were wide with lingering fear.
“Emma!” Alex’s voice echoed suddenly, raw and frantic.
Emma’s head snapped toward the temple’s entrance. Alex stood there, breathless, his expression a mix of disbelief, desperation, and relief. For a moment, he seemed frozen in place, as if afraid that if he moved too quickly, she might dissolve into shadow once again.
Emma staggered toward him, tears already welling in her eyes. “Alex!” she cried, her voice trembling.
He met her halfway, sweeping her into his arms with such force that it felt as if he was trying to merge her into himself. “I thought I lost you,” Alex whispered into her hair, his voice cracked and fragile. “Every night… I kept seeing you trapped. I couldn’t do anything. I ”
Emma clung to him like a lifeline, sobs racking her body. “I was scared, Alex. So scared. I didn’t know if I’d ever see you again.”
Alex pulled back just enough to cup her face, his hands trembling. His gaze was heavy with guilt and devotion. “You’re here now. That’s all that matters.” He pressed a kiss to her forehead, his voice low and fierce. “I swear, I’ll never let anything take you away again.”
Emma nodded, her tears spilling over as she leaned into him. “I missed you so much.”
“I missed you too,” Alex whispered, holding her tighter. “We’ll get through this. Together.”
The others stood in somber silence, giving them a moment. Even Lexi, with her usual sharp edge, softened as she watched the reunion unfold. The weight of everything Emma’s escape, Alex’s torment, and the relentless pursuit of the Chronicle settled on them all, but in this brief moment, nothing mattered except that Emma was back.
Everett cleared his throat gently, signaling that their reprieve could not last much longer. “We need to move. There’s still danger.”
Jonathan nodded, though his gaze lingered on Alex and Emma. The reunion had brought a brief flicker of hope, but the darkness around them was thick with unspoken threats.
“Where are Richard and Victoria?” Jonathan asked, his brow furrowing as he scanned the temple. They had been with the group moments ago, but now they were gone, their absence unsettling.
Everett’s face darkened. “They vanished before we reached the temple, But...” He trailed off, uneasy. “It’s strange”
Lexi’s lips pressed into a thin line. “I don’t trust them.”
“We’ll figure that out later,” Selena or the woman who looked like Selena—interjected, her voice edged with impatience. “Right now, we need to find the central chamber.”
