_________________________________________The group gathered under the dim light, the Chronicle between them like an unsolved riddle. Alex exhaled slowly, the weight of his secrets pressing down on him. He had to tell them the truth.
“I need to tell you all something,” Alex began, his voice thick with guilt. “Remember when Detective James left that box? I... I found it. But I didn’t say anything because Uncle and Aunt” He faltered, struggling to speak. “They convinced me it was safer this way. They said the less you knew, the better.”
Jonathan leaned forward, his eyes sharp. “Safer for us or for them?”
Alex lowered his gaze. “They made me think it was for everyone’s safety. But... I was a fool. They were using me the whole time.”
Emma’s expression hardened, a mix of anger and sorrow. “I trusted them. I knew they were controlling, but... I didn’t think they’d go this far.”
Taking her hand, Alex’s voice cracked with regret. “I wanted to tell you. But they said it would make everything worse.”
Tears shimmered in Emma’s eyes. “You should’ve told me, Alex. We could’ve faced it together.”
Emma’s voice trembled with disbelief. “You kept that from me?”
I can't be-believe y-you hid it from me.
You should’ve told me earlierAlex sighed, frustration flickering in his eyes. “Uncle and Aunt pressured me. They said it would only make things worse.”
“You let them manipulate you?” Emma’s voice cracked. “After everything?”
He stepped closer, his voice urgent. “I thought I was protecting you. I thought it was the only way.”
“You were supposed to trust me” Her anger softened into sorrow. “I thought we were in this together.”
Everett broke the tense silence. “What else did the box reveal?”
Alex pulled out the decoded notes. “The Chronicle doesn’t just record events it controls dimensional barriers. But the ritual only works during the celestial alignment in two days.”
Jonathan’s jaw tightened. “And if the Order gets to it first?”
Lexi’s face darkened. “They won’t just open doors. They’ll rewrite reality.”
Emma buried her face in her hands, emotions swirling beneath the surface. “So, mom and dad were playing both sides all along.”
Alex turned to Emma, guilt etched into every word. “I never wanted to hurt you... I didn’t know what else to do.”
Her defenses faltered as she saw the raw regret in his eyes. “I missed you, Alex. Even with everything, I couldn’t stop thinking about you.”
Alex’s voice softened. “I was terrified. Terrified of losing you. Of making the wrong choice.”
Emma squeezed his hand. “Just... don’t leave me again. Not like that.”
He leaned closer, his forehead resting against hers. “Never.”
Suspended in the moment, they held on to each other, a fragile anchor amid the storm of uncertainty. The Chronicle’s power loomed, betrayal simmered just beneath the surface, and time was running out.
Alex squeezed her hand. “I won’t keep anything from you again. I swear.”
As the group decoded the Chronicle, symbols revealed instructions etched like a cosmic map. Lexi traced the runes with her finger.
“This isn’t just a guide,” she muttered. “It’s a warning.”
Everett, for once serious, leaned closer. “A warning about what?”
“Whoever wields this wrong won’t just open doors... they’ll unleash chaos.” Lexi’s voice was grim. “This isn’t a tool it’s a key to something dangerous.”
Meanwhile, Richard and Victoria sat in a dimly lit room, fear gnawing at them. The Chronicle slipping from their grasp had consequences, and they knew the Shadow Order wouldn’t tolerate failure.
Victoria clenched her fists. “They promised us everything. Now... we’re in too deep.”
Richard rubbed his temples. “If the Order finds out, we’re dead.”
“We need to act fast,” Victoria whispered. “The Chronicle can’t stay with them. Our only chance is to get ahead of the Order.”
Jonathan studied Selena, trying to shake the uneasy feeling creeping over him. Something felt... off. He tested her, bringing up old memories a song they used to sing on late-night walks but her responses were hesitant, vague.
“That’s weird,” Jonathan said with a forced smile. “You used to love that song. Remember how we sang it all the way home?”
Selena’s brow furrowed, uncertainty flickering across her face. “Of course... I do.”
But Jonathan knew. The real Selena would’ve laughed at the memory. This wasn’t her.
His mind raced.Where is the real Selena?
In the shadows, the impostor Selena moved to a secluded corner, her fingers brushing the rune etched on her arm.
“They’ve decoded the Chronicle,” she whispered.
A voice answered from the void, cold and commanding. “Stay with them. Wait for the signal.”
A wicked grin curled her lips. The game was just beginning.
TO BE CONTINUED...
