Author's POV,
The morning sun filtered through the stained-glass windows of Professor Everett’s office, casting fragmented patterns of color across the ancient texts and artifacts that lined the shelves. Jonathan and Selena hesitated at the doorway, exchanging a glance that held equal parts anticipation and unease. The quiet of the room was almost too perfect, as if the mysteries they were about to uncover had been waiting, dormant, for centuries.
“I’m glad we’re finally getting somewhere,” Selena murmured, her fingers gripping the still-warm cup of coffee she carried. The steam curled lazily into the air, a fragile reminder of normalcy.
Jonathan nodded, but his gaze remained fixed on the small box in his bag. "Everett’s the key. We’re close now, I can feel it."
As they stepped inside, Professor Everett greeted them with a wide, knowing smile. His office was a maze of clutter dusty tomes stacked high on every surface, strange artifacts scattered haphazardly as though he'd spent decades gathering fragments of forgotten worlds.
"Jonathan, Selena," Everett said warmly, motioning them to sit. "I’ve been expecting you."
The professor’s voice, usually calm and scholarly, had a certain gravity today. He led them to a long wooden table, its surface worn smooth by time, and gestured to the ancient box Jonathan pulled from his bag. It sat between them, the dark wood almost absorbing the light.
Jonathan placed the box carefully in the center of the table, his fingers lingering on its surface as if it might hold the answers they so desperately needed. The box was small but intricately designed, its sides etched with strange symbols that seemed to shift and change when caught in the light.
“This box…” Jonathan began, his voice low, “what’s inside could change everything, couldn’t it?”
Everett’s eyes sparkled. "Indeed. This box was crafted by an ancient order, guardians of the Chronicle. These symbols " he gestured to the etchings along the box’s sides "they map celestial events. Solve this, and the Chronicle's location will be within our reach."
Selena leaned in, her fingers brushing across the runes. She could feel the faint pulse of energy beneath her fingertips, like touching the memory of a heartbeat. “The craftsmanship… it's breathtaking. These are constellations, aren't they?"
Everett nodded, his expression growing serious. "Yes, but more than that. These patterns are alchemical transformations marks of protection and power. The ancients believed the stars were connected to every living thing."
Jonathan sat back, the weight of the moment pressing down on him. “How do we start?”
Before Professor Everett could answer, the door creaked open, and Lexi slipped inside. There was something off in the way she moved her usual swagger was gone, replaced by nervous energy. She clutched a small bag, her knuckles white around the handle.
“Hey, gays,” she said, her voice unusually quiet. “I, uh, brought lunch. Thought you might need a break.”
Jonathan and Selena exchanged a look. It wasn’t like Lexi to be so subdued.
Lexi placed the bag on the table and pulled out sandwiches, but what caught their attention were the two delicate necklaces she carefully unwrapped. Moonstone gleamed softly at their centers, woven into silver chains.
“These will protect you,” Lexi said, her voice barely above a whisper. “Moonstone, silver, and some herbs... They’ll keep the shadows at bay.”
Jonathan frowned. "Shadows?"
Lexi met his gaze, her face pale, and for a moment she seemed far away. "I... lost someone to them. I'm not going to let that happen again."
There was a tremor in her hands as she poured herself a cup of coffee, and Jonathan felt a chill crawl up his spine. Something wasn’t right.
They continued their work, the atmosphere in the room thickening with unspoken tension. The symbols on the box slowly began to reveal themselves, and the pieces started falling into place. But the room felt heavier somehow, the air too still.
Suddenly, without warning, Lexi’s hand jerked, sending her coffee crashing to the floor. The sound of breaking glass shattered the silence, but it was nothing compared to the sight of Lexi’s eyes lolling back into her head, leaving only the whites.
“Lexi!” Selena gasped, rushing toward her.
Jonathan was frozen, his mind racing. This wasn’t normal. Lexi’s body convulsed violently, and when her eyes finally snapped open, they were not her own. Deep, hollow blackness stared back at them.
“Lexi, can you hear me?” Jonathan demanded, but the voice that came from her lips was not hers.
"Emma’s time is running out," the voice growled, dark and mocking.
Selena’s breath hitched in her throat. "What—what are you?"
Lexi’s body twisted, bending unnaturally, her bones creaking like an old tree in the wind. The smile that curled on her lips was grotesque, almost as if her skin had been stretched too tightly.
“I am the one who waits,” the voice whispered, cold as ice. “And soon, she will be ours.”
Jonathan’s blood ran cold, but his mind raced for a solution. Lexi’s body convulsed again, her movements increasingly erratic, as if something unseen was trying to take full control. The tension in the room was suffocating, the air thick with an oppressive, otherworldly presence.
Selena stepped forward cautiously, her voice trembling. "We’ll stop you. Whatever you are, we’ll find a way."
The thing inside Lexi merely laughed a sound so unnatural it made Jonathan’s skin prickle. "You think you can stop what’s already begun? Emma is ours, and soon you will be too."
Jonathan felt a surge of anger rising. "We’ll find her. We’ll stop you."
Lexi's body snapped toward him, her blackened eyes locking on his. For a brief moment, he thought he saw a flicker of the real Lexi behind that darkness, but it was swallowed by the entity within.
"You can’t save her," the voice hissed, leaning closer, as if enjoying the torment it was causing. "She’s already marked. The Chronicle won’t save her, and neither will you."
Before Jonathan could react, Lexi’s body jerked violently one last time and then went still. Her head slumped forward, her breathing ragged but steady. Slowly, the color began to return to her face, the blackness receding from her eyes.
Selena knelt beside her, placing a hand on Lexi’s shoulder, relief flooding her features. “Lexi? Can you hear me?”
Lexi blinked, her breath shallow and uneven. She looked dazed, as if she had just emerged from a nightmare. “What… what happened?” she whispered, her voice weak and hoarse.
Jonathan knelt beside her. “You were possessed, Lexi. By something—something connected to Emma.”
Lexi’s face paled further, her eyes widening in fear. “No… not again.”
Selena glanced at Jonathan, her voice tense. “We need to hurry. If whatever’s inside her knows where Emma is, we’re running out of time.”
Jonathan nodded, his gaze shifting to the box on the table. The symbols still glowed faintly, as though waiting to reveal the next step. He could feel the weight of what lay ahead pressing down on him, but he knew one thing for certain they couldn’t afford any more delays.
“We’ll figure this out,” Jonathan said, determination hardening his voice. “The Chronicle, the box, whatever just happened to Lexi it’s all connected. We’re close, and we can’t let them take Emma.”
Selena stood, her expression resolute. “Then we’ll need to solve the box. Fast.”
As the group gathered their strength, the cryptic box sat quietly on the table, its secrets locked away for now, but not for long. The race against time had begun, and the shadows were closing in faster than they’d anticipated.
