The air in the chamber was suffocating, like it knew the weight of the secrets Alex carried. He leaned against the cold stone wall, keeping his hands clenched. Every breath felt heavy, each moment dragging him deeper into the pit of guilt he had been avoiding for far too long.
Emma was beside him so close, yet the distance between them had never felt wider. He knew he should’ve said something sooner. Every time her step-parents’ names crossed his mind, it twisted in his gut.
He rubbed his temples and finally broke the silence.
Alex's Pov,
“I’ve been holding this in for too long,” Alex began, his voice low but determined. “And I know I should have told you earlier. But it wasn’t that simple.”
All eyes turned toward him Jonathan, Selena, Lexi, Professor Everett, and Emma. The weight of their expectations pressed against his chest, but Alex knew he had to lay it all out now.
“Emma…” His gaze met hers. “I knew something was off with your step-parents for a while. Uncle and aunt they’ve been working with the Shadow Order for years. But I had no proof back then. And without it, I was scared you'd think I was crazy or paranoid."
Emma’s breath hitched, and Alex saw a flicker of recognition in her eyes like some part of her had known but never wanted to believe it.
“I thought… If I accused them without solid evidence, it would only make things worse. And the truth is…” Alex swallowed hard. “I thought I could handle it alone. I wanted to protect you, but I made things worse by keeping it to myself.”
Jonathan frowned. “Why now, Alex? Why didn’t you tell us the moment you knew for sure?”
“Because by the time I realized how deep they were in, it was already too late,” Alex admitted, guilt clawing at his throat. “And when Emma disappeared, I thought maybe it was connected, but I didn’t know how. I kept hoping it was something else that they hadn’t crossed that final line.”
Emma’s hands trembled as she listened. Her step-parents’ betrayal was a truth she hadn’t wanted to face, but it was a truth she had always feared.
“I wanted to believe they still cared about me,” Emma whispered. “Even if they were distant, even if they weren’t perfect… I thought family meant something to them.” She looked down, her fingers tracing patterns on the cold floor. “I should’ve known better. I saw the signs the way they hid things, the strange visitors. But I ignored it because I didn’t want it to be true.”
Alex reached for her hand, but she pulled away for a moment, lost in her thoughts.
“They were the only family I had left,” Emma continued, her voice breaking. “I trusted them… and they handed me over to the Order like I was nothing.”
Tears welled in her eyes, and Alex’s heart shattered at the sight of her pain. He hated himself for not speaking up sooner, for letting her carry this burden alone.
“I’m sorry, Emma,” Alex whispered. “I thought I was protecting you… but I only made things worse.”
Emma looked at him, her expression softening. “It wasn’t your fault. You were trying to help. But it still hurts.”
Jonathan cleared his throat, breaking the heavy silence. “So what do we do now? If Richard and Victoria are tied to the Shadow Order, they’re going to come for the Chronicle.”
Professor Everett stroked his beard thoughtfully. “We need to stay ahead of them. If they’re working with the Order, they’ll stop at nothing to get what they want.”
“We’ve got to be smart about this,” Lexi added, crossing her arms. “No reckless moves. The Order isn’t just some cult they’ve got resources, power, and eyes everywhere.”
Selena nodded. “The Chronicle is our only leverage. We can’t let it fall into their hands.”
Everett glanced at Lexi with a rare smile. “Feels like old times, doesn’t it?”
Lexi smirked. “Except this time, we’re not dealing with cursed raccoons.”
The two exchanged a look that spoke of years of shared adventures and dangers.
As the others discussed their next steps, Alex leaned closer to Emma, his voice soft. “I never wanted to hurt you, Emma. I just... didn’t know how to tell you everything without making things worse.”
Emma looked at him, her eyes still clouded with pain but with a flicker of understanding. “I know. And I missed you, Alex. More than anything.”
He reached for her hand again, and this time, she let him hold it. The warmth of her touch was a balm to the cold guilt that had wrapped around his heart for so long.
“I was so scared,” Emma admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. “I thought I’d never see you again.”
Alex squeezed her hand gently, leaning his forehead against hers. “You’re here now. And I’m not letting you go.”
For a moment, the world outside ceased to exist, and it was just the two of them holding on to each other amidst the chaos.
In the shadows, Selena slipped away from the group unnoticed. Her fingers brushed over a rune hidden beneath her sleeve a direct link to the Shadow Order.
“They know,” she whispered into the void, her voice carrying through the darkness. “Richard, Victoria… everything.”
A voice responded, cold and malicious. "Good. Stay close to them. Wait for our signal."
The spy’s lips curled into a sinister smile. The game was far from over.
Far from the group’s hiding place, Richard and Victoria sat in a dim chamber filled with ancient relics. The Shadow Order’s leaders surrounded them, their faces obscured by hoods.
“We’ve done everything you asked,” Richard said, his voice tense. “Now, we expect our reward.”
The figure at the head of the table leaned forward, their presence radiating malevolence. “You will get what you deserve… once the Chronicle is in our hands.”
Victoria clenched her fists, her expression unreadable. “We’ve sacrificed everything for this. Don’t think you can cheat us.”
The figure chuckled, the sound sending chills through the room. “Oh, we never cheat. But be careful what you wish for Richard. The deeper you go the harder it is to climb back out.”
Richard said nothing, but his jaw tightened. They had gone too far to turn back now.
