George
The vibration from my phone woke me up. I realised it was six in the morning, and I was not due to get up for another hour. As I unlocked my phone to read the message, worry griped my heart.
"Baby, sorry for not getting in touch earlier... I spent the night in the Emergency Department as I sprained my ankle pretty badly when someone fell into me at the gig. Don't worry though, I'm okay and am on my way home now. Hope you are ok?"
"Where are you now? Do you want me to get you?"
"Sorry for waking you up, I thought you always silenced your phone when you slept."
"Yeah, but I set for it to be bypassed if my loved ones needed me and I don't want to miss anything. Are you alright? Do you want me to come to you?"
"Don't worry, Erik is with me."
I let the phone fall out of my hand and laid back in bed. It's been only two days without seeing her and those days made me feel out of sync. I know we had agreed to take it slow, but we had literally spent the last six weeks getting to know one another, and I could feel myself slowly warming to the idea of having her permanently by my side. Maybe it just was not meant to be. Maybe I was just a summer fling for her, a plaything that acted as a replacement for her boyfriend who was waiting for her to start a life with him at home. The thoughts of them being intimate continuously tortured me.
Knowing that Rae would be leaving to go home in two weeks time whilst I compete in my last race of the season, I made a decision that I knew would bring temporary pain, but I chose it because it was the wiser path—one that would ultimately spare us from greater heartbreak in the long run.
