GD also remembered Jennie, and he believed that any boy who was once in the same class as Jennie would not forget her. But GD's deepest impression of Jennie was not her delicate and sweet face, but that no matter the class or grade honors, Jennie's name was always right behind his. For the midterms and finals, the seat behind his, which was #2, always belonged to Jennie. A beauty, a studious beauty, GD thought it would be hard not to have an impression.

But after being in the same class for a year, Jennie sat in the middle of the classroom while he sat in the last row. GD and Jennie had barely spoken. Only once during an exam, Jennie's eraser fell to the ground and he picked it up for her. Jennie smiled at him and thanked him, her smile was pure and bright, her gaze towards him only contained the most simple gratitude between classmates, without any shyness or affection that other girls had.

As for exam grades, GD did not intentionally compete with anyone. Being number one every year was nothing to be arrogant about, but when the rankings for the end of freshman year came out, he realized Jennie had surpassed him. GD inevitably felt a little complicated inside, it wasn't self-blame or jealousy, just a feeling that Jennie was very smart and getting high science scores was not something diligence and hard work alone could achieve.

After summer vacation started, GD forgot about the score sheet and went travelling everywhere. When he returned to school for sophomore year, he continued with classes. The class arrangements for science students were posted on the bulletin board. GD saw his own class, he was still #1, but the #2 below had a different name. GD thought of Jennie, assuming she had been placed in another class. He looked through each science and liberal arts class, but did not see the familiar name.

Later GD heard from classmates that Jennie had dropped out of school because her family did not have money.

GD felt regretful, and from then on whenever he entered the classroom for an exam, he would habitually glance at the seat where the second-ranked student used to sit. It changed almost every time, never again sitting there was a simply dressed girl with her hair in braided pigtails, that girl with the especially warm smile.

Jennie was a unique shadow of GD's high school years, a memory belonging to his youth. He did not intentionally reminisce about her, but when Jennie appeared before him again, GD could not conceal his shock.

"Jennie, do you, do you still recognize me?" After a brief moment of shock, GD left his seat and smiled gently at Jennie, as if seeing an old friend.

"The grade's perpetual number one, of course I remember you. But you seem different from high school, I didn't recognize you at first just now." Jennie held the big white cat in her arms and spoke as naturally as she could. She had to admit, holding a cat seemed to make her less nervous.

"You know each other?" Nancy's smile was somewhat stiff, because she noticed GD's attitude towards Jennie was much warmer than with her.

"We were classmates in freshman year."

GD gave a simple explanation, then looked at the well-behaved big white cat nestled in Jennie's arms. GD resignedly laughed, and said: "Cat Lord was a stray cat picked up by a department director in the tech department previously, he's always been kept here and doesn't like people much. So we started using Cat Lord to interview new members. Everyone's professional skills are about the same when they first enter university, so we just competed on who has better rapport with animals."

Last year when I came to interview, Cat Lord just stretched his neck to sniff me a little. You did better with him."

This cat is called Cat Lord?

Jennie also laughed, looking down at Cat Lord, his chubby eyes narrowed to a slit, he really did look like the big shot characters on TV.

"We're taking three people this time. Jennie you're definitely in, Nancy why don't you try?" There were still other new students waiting to interview outside, so GD got down to business first and had Jennie put Cat Lord on the table, then asked Nancy to give it a try.
