Can you repeat the question, please? I asked, loud so she could hear me, I was happy I spoke, and I trying to buy myself a few seconds, to calm the fuck down, I was smart, I read dad's medical books, it was nothing and I needed to hear the question. The professor gave me a look, one that said she knew I hadn’t been paying attention, but she repeated it anyway.
The question is, in cases of a traumatic brain injury involving a subdural hematoma, why is it that the symptoms can sometimes take hours or even days to present themselves, despite the injury occurring immediately?
I could feel everyone’s eyes on me, the pressure building, I controlled my breathing, I could get through today tomorrow will be easy peasy.
My mind scrambled for what I remembered from reading about brain injuries before. I took a breath and started piecing it together, what I read, dad teaching me.
Well, subdural hematomas involve the bleeding of veins, not arteries. Since veins have a lower pressure compared to arteries, the bleeding occurs more slowly. This gradual accumulation of blood in the subdural space compresses the brain over time, which is why symptoms like headaches, confusion, or motor impairments can be delayed. The slow progression can make it harder to detect initially, even though the injury is already taking place I replied and sat down quickly.
The room was quiet. I glanced at the professor, unsure if I’d said enough. She nodded slowly, her expression softening into a smile.
Correct, she said, and suddenly, the room erupted into applause.
I smiled in gratitude and Chad nudged me as if to say, proud of you man.
Class ended after two hours, my next lesson was at two o'clock, and I only had one free hour.
Let's exchange numbers, Ennie said smiling.
I took their phone and texted them my number.
I'll send it to everyone, and welcome to the group Ennie said. I nodded.
We are going to add you to our group on WhatsApp, Brent said and I nodded. I smiled, I had three friends, on my first day and I haven't gotten an attack.
Just then my phone rang, it was grandma. We had two grandpa's, one Matthews Prince, who was dad's father we called him Grandpa, then two, Richard Floyd, we called him grandfather, then his wife, my grandma, Elizabeth. My family was big, I had cousins on my father's side, there is Aunt May who never got married but she had two kids, Tina she is eight and Karissa who is nine, then Uncle Leon, his wife died last year, he has two kids, Natasha we call her Nat, she is thirteen and Charlie a boy who is thirteen too, they are fraternal twins, there's Uncle Clay, and his wife Aunt Ruth, their kids, are Nicole, we call her Nicky, she's thirteen, Alex, he's twelve and Ryan he's ten. Then of course we have Uncle Ilay who's married to my dad's brother, Uncle Liam, they have four kids, first one is, Luka, he's nineteen like me, then Fiona she is thirteen, we call her Fifi, then we have Henry and Isabella, they are fraternal twins, and are seven years old.
Luka was adopted, like me, Fiona is Uncle Liam's biological daughter and the twins are Uncle Ilay's biological kids, both Fifi and the twins share the same surrogate mother. Those are my Floyd relatives, then we have my Prince relatives and those are Uncle Kim and Kenny's kids, Jason, we call him Jay, he's the same age as me and Luka and Emma she's ten years old.
I silenced it and put it in my pockets. I'll talk to her later, she was probably worried about me, Father must have told her.
Dude that's your grandma, Chad said.
I know that's why I'm not answering, she is going to nag me all day, better I do it with a clear mind, later I said grabbing my bag and putting my books inside.
