"What are you doing here?" he asks me, his eyes raking over my drenched body and widening. Instantly, he opens the door further, allowing me to slip inside and grab a towel from somewhere, handing it to me.
My sobs may have taken a backseat f...

I blow out an exhale and click on the dial button. Three rings later, my sister’s face fills the screen. “Kya hai?” she says as soon as she picks up the phone and rolls her eyes.
(What is it?)
“Mein kya aise hi tujhe phone nahi kar sakta kabhi?” I reply and make a face.
(Can’t I be calling you just like that for no reason?)
“Nahi!” Somebody taps on her shoulder and she turns, talks to the person as she nods and then turns back to me again. “I’m busy, Ansh.”
“Ye Ansh kya hota hai? Bada hu tujhse, bhai bula.” I narrow my eyes on the screen, knowing she hates it when I do that.
(Why are you calling me by my name? I’m your older brother, call me brother.)
“Bhaiyon vale bade kaam krliye haina jaise tumne,” she says, then mimics me, “Aaye bade bhai bula. Bhagg paagal. Phone kyu kiya bata na.”
(As if you’ve done anything worthy of being called a brother. Call me big brother, you say. Shoo, stupid. Tell me why you called me.)
“Vo. . .” I fumble. I never fumble. “I— I just wanted to tell you something.”
I see as someone hands her an icecream on the video call and she opens the wrapper, taking a bite out of it. “Hmm, go on.”
“Arey, vo teri dost haina,” I start. Shit. This is harder than I expected but after the way I babbled my heart out like a kid yesterday, I know I have to confess to Janki what I said to Anaya.
(You have that one friend no. . .)
“I have a lot of friends. Which one are you talking about?” There’s a sudden loud laughter in her background and she turns to them before muting the call and tells them something as she nods. A minute later, Janki picks up her phone and enters into a room, closing the door behind her and unmutes the call. There’s no noise of any chatter and its relatively quieter now. “Aayansh?”
I blink, focusing back to her. Janki has her hair in some kind of weird updo and is probably in her room while her colleagues hang out in the living room of the penthouse I’d booked for her to stay in. I knew she’d be at home and relaxed in the evening so that’s when I chose to call her. I need her mind to be open and really not stressed during this conversation.
“Aayansh!” she chides.
“Haa bhai. Do minute saans mat lene dena mujhe,” I huff.
