The next morning, the air felt heavier, as if the peaceful weekend getaway was about to take an unexpected turn. The friends had spent the previous night laughing around the campfire, but today, a subtle tension lingered in the atmosphere. Kylie and Malia were the first to notice it—an unsettling quiet that contrasted with the usual sounds of nature outside.

Kylie stretched and sat up in bed, the sunlight barely filtering through the curtains. "Do you feel that?" she asked, her voice quiet but concerned.

Malia, still half-asleep, blinked and frowned. "Feel what?"

"The quiet. It's too quiet. No birds, no wind... it's like everything just stopped," Kylie whispered, peering out the window.

Malia sat up quickly, the uneasy feeling now hitting her too. "You're right. That's weird."

The two girls exchanged a glance, worry creeping into their thoughts. They decided to head downstairs where they found Ruby, Joshua, Dara, Peder, and Morgan gathered in the kitchen. The others had noticed the eerie calmness as well.

"Does anyone else feel like we're in a horror movie?" Ruby joked, but her nervous laugh gave away her unease.

Joshua shook his head, his face serious. "I don't know what's going on, but something feels off. Maybe we should check outside, make sure everything's okay."

Reluctantly, the group agreed to investigate. As they stepped out of the cabin, they were met with an unnatural stillness. The trees, normally swaying with the wind, stood perfectly still. Not a single bird sang, and the forest that had once felt so alive now seemed empty.

"Okay, this is officially creepy," Peder muttered, clutching his guitar like a shield.

Malia shivered despite the warm morning air. "Do you think we should leave? Maybe something's wrong with the area."

Just as the group began discussing their options, a loud crack echoed from deep within the woods, making everyone jump.

"What was that?" Morgan whispered, her eyes wide.

Before anyone could respond, a figure emerged from the tree line—a woman with disheveled hair and a look of desperation on her face. She stumbled toward the group, her voice frantic.

"Help me!" she cried. "Please, help me!"

Kylie's heart raced as the woman collapsed in front of them. She knelt down to help, and the woman grabbed her arm with surprising strength. "You have to leave. Now. They're coming," the woman rasped.

"Who's coming?" Dara asked, her voice trembling.

The woman's eyes darted around wildly. "The shadows... they took my family. They'll take you too if you stay."

Fear rippled through the group, and Kylie felt Malia's hand squeeze hers tightly. "We need to get out of here," Malia whispered.

Without wasting another second, they helped the woman to her feet and rushed back to the cabin. The carefree weekend they had planned was quickly unraveling into something far more sinister.

Inside the cabin, Ruby locked the door behind them. "Okay, what now?" she asked, her voice shaking.

The woman sat on the couch, her breathing labored. "The shadows... they come when the forest falls silent. They're not human, but they look like people. You won't know who's real and who's them. You have to be careful."

Kylie exchanged a terrified glance with Malia. "Is this some kind of ghost story?" Kylie asked, hoping for a logical explanation.

"I wish it was," the woman replied, her voice filled with dread. "I barely escaped. I thought my husband was still him, but it wasn't him. It was one of them. They take your shape, your voice, but they're hollow inside."

The friends sat in stunned silence, unsure of what to believe. But the fear in the woman's eyes was undeniable.

Joshua stood up, trying to take control of the situation. "Alright, we need a plan. If what she's saying is true, we can't just sit here and wait for whatever those things are to come for us. We need to get out of the forest, back to the main road."

"But what if they've already taken one of us?" Ruby asked, her voice barely a whisper. "How would we even know?"

A heavy silence fell over the group, and suddenly, no one felt as safe as they had just moments before.

Kylie looked around at her friends, the faces of people she trusted completely. But the woman's words echoed in her mind. You won't know who's real and who's them.

Her stomach twisted in knots. How could they leave the cabin, knowing that someone might not be who they seemed?
