The night pressed in around them like a living, breathing entity. The twisted version of Malia, the dark doppelganger, stood motionless on the road, its hollow eyes reflecting nothing but the void. Kylie tightened her grip on Malia's hand, their silent understanding louder than any words. Whatever this thing was, they were facing it together.

Joshua kept glancing at the rearview mirror, his jaw clenched. "We can't stay here forever. We've got to move. If it gets any closer, we might not have a chance to fight."

Ruby shivered. "Fight what? That thing isn't real... it's like a nightmare."

"It's as real as it needs to be," Kylie muttered under her breath. Her heart raced as she stared at the figure. Every instinct told her to run, but there was nowhere left to go.

Malia squeezed her hand. "We face it, like you said."

Joshua popped open the glove compartment, pulling out a flashlight and handing it to Dara. "Stay close to me," he whispered. The group slowly opened their doors, stepping out into the cold, heavy air. Kylie and Malia were the last to exit, their eyes locked on the creature as it remained unnervingly still, watching them like a predator waiting for the perfect moment to strike.

Kylie took a step forward, her breath coming out in ragged gasps. "What do you want?" she demanded, her voice stronger than she felt.

The figure didn't respond. It simply took a slow step forward, mimicking Malia's movements with terrifying precision. Kylie's pulse quickened as she saw the same expression on its face-only warped, twisted, like something trying to mimic humanity but failing horribly.

Malia stepped closer to Kylie, her eyes never leaving the creature. "If it's copying me, maybe it's because it's trying to get close enough. Maybe... maybe it wants to replace me."

"No," Kylie said firmly, pulling her closer. "That's not going to happen."

The wind rustled the trees, and in that moment, the shadowy figure surged forward, moving with a speed that made everyone jump back in terror.

Joshua lifted the flashlight, shining it directly into the figure's face. To everyone's shock, it recoiled violently, hissing as if the light was searing its skin. Kylie's heart leapt-maybe they had a way to fight this thing after all.

"Keep the light on it!" Malia shouted, gripping Kylie's arm as they backed away.

Joshua's hands shook as he held the beam steady on the creature, but it only seemed to stall it for a moment. The doppelganger twisted and contorted, its face warping between Malia's likeness and something far darker, more sinister. Shadows poured off it like smoke, swirling around them, making it harder to see.

"We can't stay here!" Ruby cried, fear choking her voice.

Malia's eyes darted to the side of the road, where the trees were thick and dark. "We have to get into the forest," she said quickly. "If the road is a trap, the forest might be our only chance."

Joshua looked uncertain. "The forest could be worse. What if there are more of them out there?"

"It's better than staying here," Kylie said, her voice firm. "If we keep moving, we might find a way out."

Without another word, the group bolted into the forest, their footsteps muffled by the thick underbrush. Kylie kept Malia close, her hand tightly gripping hers as they pushed through the dark trees. The air felt heavier here, as if the forest itself was alive, watching their every move.

Branches clawed at their clothes and faces, but they didn't stop. Behind them, the eerie, distorted figure pursued, its hollow gaze never wavering.

"How long do we have to run?" Dara asked, her breath ragged as they weaved through the trees.

"As long as it takes," Kylie answered, determination burning in her chest. She wouldn't let this thing take Malia. They were going to survive this-together.

Suddenly, they stumbled into a clearing, and the group came to an abrupt halt. In the center stood an old, weathered cabin, its roof sagging and windows dark. It looked abandoned, but it also felt wrong. The air around it was thick with tension, like the very ground was holding its breath.

"We can't stay out here," Joshua said, panting. "We need shelter."

Kylie hesitated, staring at the cabin. It didn't feel safe, but the forest was no better. Malia's grip tightened on her hand, and that was all the confirmation she needed.

"Let's go inside," Kylie said, leading the group toward the door. It creaked open with a groan, and they quickly filed inside, bolting the door behind them.

The interior was dark and musty, the air thick with dust. Cobwebs hung from the corners, and the floor creaked underfoot. But for now, it felt like a safe haven-at least compared to what was outside.

"We'll stay here until morning," Joshua said, leaning against the door. "Whatever that thing is, it might not be able to get in."

But even as he said it, Kylie wasn't convinced. The cabin felt like a trap, just another part of the nightmare they couldn't escape.

Malia sat down next to her, leaning her head against Kylie's shoulder. "We'll figure it out," she whispered, her breath warm against Kylie's skin. "We always do."

Kylie nodded, though the unease gnawing at her wouldn't go away. The night was far from over, and the shadows still lurked just beyond the door.
