In the weeks that followed their difficult conversation, Kylie and Malia found themselves navigating the unfamiliar terrain of their new, distanced relationship. It wasn't a breakup, but it wasn't the same as before either. They both agreed to give each other space, but every message, every glance, still carried the weight of unspoken emotions.
Kylie buried herself in her work, taking on new projects, and surrounding herself with friends to distract from the lingering ache. She spent more time with Joshua, Ruby, Dara, Morgan, and Peder. They were supportive, offering their ears when Kylie needed to vent, though they were careful not to ask too many questions about Malia.
One Saturday, the group decided to head out for a hike in Griffith Park. It was Ruby's idea—"Fresh air will do you good," she'd insisted when Kylie hesitated. The sun shone brightly as they started up the trail, the city stretching out below them. The sound of their laughter and playful banter echoed through the trees, but despite the company, Kylie's mind kept drifting back to Malia.
As they climbed higher, Ruby slowed her pace until she was walking beside Kylie. She glanced at her, concern etched on her face.
"You've been quiet today," Ruby said gently. "You doing okay?"
Kylie sighed, kicking a small rock along the dirt path. "I'm trying. It's just... hard, you know? Giving Malia space, but still wanting to be close to her."
Ruby nodded, understanding in her eyes. "It's tough. You two have always been so connected. But maybe this space will give both of you some clarity."
"I hope so," Kylie said, though her voice betrayed her uncertainty. "I just miss her. Even though we're not technically broken up, it feels like we are."
Ruby bumped her shoulder lightly. "Hey, it's normal to feel that way. But Malia loves you. This isn't the end. It's just a chapter—things can still turn around."
Kylie forced a smile, grateful for Ruby's optimism, but deep down, she couldn't shake the feeling that the distance between her and Malia was growing wider.
As they reached the top of the trail, the group paused to take in the view. The city stretched out below them, vast and full of life. Joshua pulled out his phone to take a group selfie, and as they all crowded together, Kylie found herself smiling, if only for a moment, caught up in the warmth of her friends' support.
That night, back at her apartment, Kylie lay in bed, staring at her phone. She and Malia hadn't spoken much since their talk about taking space. The silence between them was deafening, and Kylie found herself wanting to reach out, to hear Malia's voice, even if just for a moment.
After staring at the blank message screen for what felt like hours, Kylie finally typed out a simple message:
Kylie: Thinking of you. Hope you're doing okay.
She hesitated before hitting send, her thumb hovering over the button. Finally, she took a deep breath and pressed it. The message sent, and she stared at the screen, waiting, her heart pounding.
Minutes passed. Then, her phone buzzed with a reply.
Malia: I'm okay. Thinking of you too. Miss you.
Kylie smiled softly, a bittersweet feeling washing over her. The words were simple, but they held so much emotion. She missed Malia more than she could put into words, but for now, this small exchange would have to be enough.
Across town, Malia sat in her living room, phone in hand. She stared at Kylie's message, her heart aching. She missed Kylie more than she had anticipated, but the time and space she had taken for herself had given her some much-needed clarity.
Malia had spent her days trying to reconnect with herself, journaling, meditating, and talking to her therapist. The pressure that had once felt suffocating was still there, but she was learning to manage it, little by little. But the space she had put between herself and Kylie also made her realize how much she relied on Kylie for emotional support, and how much that had weighed on their relationship.
She knew that reaching out to Kylie again, to try and rebuild what they had, would take time. And even though they weren't as close as before, Malia felt a deep sense of love for Kylie that hadn't wavered.
As she stared at the message thread, Malia made a decision. She wasn't ready to fully dive back into their relationship just yet, but she also didn't want to lose Kylie.
Picking up her phone, she typed a longer message:
Malia: I've been thinking about us a lot. I miss you too. I'm trying to figure out where we go from here, but I don't want you to think I've given up on us. I just need to find my balance first. But we'll figure it out. I love you, Kylie.
Kylie read the message, her heart swelling with emotion. It wasn't the resolution she had hoped for, but it was something. And for now, that was enough.
