Weeks passed, and Kylie and Malia fell into a new rhythm. They weren't together, but they weren't apart either. It was an in-between space where they still cared for each other but were taking time to figure themselves out. They texted occasionally, sometimes sharing a brief phone call, but most of their communication had become surface-level, safe from deeper emotions.

Their friends noticed the shift. Joshua and Ruby, in particular, had been checking in on both of them, making sure neither was feeling too isolated. One Friday afternoon, Dara organized a casual get-together at her place. The invite was extended to their usual group—Joshua, Ruby, Morgan, Peder, and of course, Malia and Kylie.

Kylie was hesitant at first. She hadn't seen Malia in person since they decided to give each other space, and part of her worried that it would be awkward. But the other part of her, the part that missed Malia more than anything, was eager to see her.

When the day arrived, Kylie arrived at Dara's apartment, a nervous energy buzzing in her chest. As soon as she walked through the door, she was greeted with warm hugs from Ruby and Dara, and Joshua immediately pulled her into a lighthearted conversation to ease her nerves.

But then, Kylie saw Malia.

Malia was sitting on the couch, chatting with Morgan and Peder. When their eyes met, there was a moment of tension—a mixture of longing, uncertainty, and something else neither of them could name. Malia offered a small, tentative smile, and Kylie returned it, though her heart raced.

The evening went by smoothly. Everyone was laughing, eating, and catching up. The familiar warmth of their friendships made Kylie relax, and for the first time in weeks, she felt like herself again. But despite the laughter and the easy conversations, her gaze kept drifting to Malia.

As the evening wore on, the group gradually dispersed. Some left, while others stayed to continue talking. Eventually, it was just Kylie and Malia sitting across the room from each other, the air between them thick with unspoken words.

Finally, Malia stood up and made her way over to Kylie. She sat down beside her, close enough that Kylie could feel the warmth of her presence but not close enough to touch. They sat in silence for a moment, neither sure how to start.

"I've missed you," Malia said quietly, her voice soft but sincere.

Kylie looked at her, the familiar ache in her chest rising again. "I've missed you too. More than I can explain."

Malia sighed, running a hand through her hair. "This... this space we've had, it's been good for me. I needed it. But it's also been really hard. I keep thinking about you, about us."

"Me too," Kylie admitted. "I've been trying to keep myself busy, but it doesn't really help. Every time I'm alone, I think about what we had and what's happening now."

Malia nodded, her eyes full of emotion. "I don't want to keep pretending like this distance is helping us when all it's doing is making us feel further apart."

Kylie felt a glimmer of hope spark inside her. "So... what do we do?"

Malia looked at her, and for the first time in a long while, there was clarity in her gaze. "I think it's time we stop running away from this. From each other. I'm not saying everything will be perfect right away, but... I want to try again, Kylie. I want to be with you."

Kylie's breath caught in her throat. "Are you sure? I don't want to push you into anything you're not ready for."

"I'm sure," Malia said firmly. "I've spent all this time trying to figure out who I am, but the truth is, I don't want to figure it out without you. I love you, Kylie, and I want to work through this together."

Kylie's heart swelled with emotion, tears pricking her eyes. She reached out, taking Malia's hand in hers. "I love you too. And I'm ready to try again, no matter how hard it is."

Malia squeezed her hand, a smile breaking through the tension. "We'll figure it out. One step at a time."

For the first time in what felt like forever, Kylie felt the weight lift from her shoulders. The future was still uncertain, but they were facing it together now, and that made all the difference.

As they sat there, holding hands and leaning into the comfort of their shared love, Kylie knew that whatever challenges came their way, they could face them. Together.
