The cabin was deathly silent, save for the creaks of the floorboards and the occasional gust of wind rattling the broken windows. Kylie sat on the dusty floor, her back pressed against the old wooden wall, with Malia curled up beside her. The others scattered around the room, trying to catch their breath, but the sense of impending doom lingered like a thick fog.

Joshua still stood by the door, his face tense as he kept his ear pressed against the wood, listening for any sign of movement outside. Ruby sat by the fireplace, shivering despite the absence of cold. Peder and Dara had taken spots by the windows, peering into the dense forest, waiting, and watching for any sign of the creature that had chased them.

Kylie's heart still pounded in her chest, her grip on Malia never loosening. Even in the relative safety of the cabin, she couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched. The eerie silence gnawed at her nerves. She glanced at Malia, who was resting her head against Kylie's shoulder, looking equally as drained.

"This place doesn't feel right," Malia whispered, her voice barely audible.

"I know," Kylie replied softly, running her fingers through Malia's hair. "But for now, it's all we've got."

Joshua finally moved away from the door, his face pale as he spoke quietly. "I don't hear it anymore. I think we've lost it."

"Or it's waiting," Dara said, her eyes wide with fear. "We don't know what it wants. What if it's just playing with us?"

"Playing with us or not," Peder said grimly, "we can't stay here forever. We need a plan."

Kylie could feel the tension growing in the room. The weight of the situation was pressing down on them all, and the darkness outside seemed to be pressing in on them from all sides. There was something about this cabin—something off. It felt like it had been waiting for them.

"We need to figure out what that thing is," Kylie said, her voice stronger than she felt. "It's not just a shadow. It's something more. We need to understand it before it finds us again."

Joshua nodded, pacing near the door. "But how do we even start? We don't know what we're up against."

Malia shifted beside Kylie, her eyes thoughtful. "It mimicked me, remember? Maybe it's drawn to us somehow... like it feeds off something. Fear maybe?"

Dara shuddered at the thought. "If it feeds off fear, then we're giving it exactly what it wants."

"But why us?" Ruby asked, her voice shaky. "Why is it after us specifically?"

Before anyone could answer, the floorboards creaked loudly from somewhere deeper in the cabin. Everyone froze, their eyes snapping toward the back of the room. The noise didn't sound like it came from any of them.

Joshua raised the flashlight, pointing it toward the dark hallway that led to the rest of the cabin. "Is someone else in here?"

The air grew colder, and Kylie felt Malia tense beside her. Slowly, Joshua moved toward the hallway, the beam of the flashlight cutting through the thick darkness. The others stood up, watching with wide eyes as he cautiously approached the source of the sound.

Another creak echoed through the room, followed by the faintest whisper—so quiet that Kylie almost thought she'd imagined it. But when she glanced at Malia, she saw the same alarmed expression on her face.

"I heard that," Malia whispered. "It's not just us in here."

Joshua stepped into the hallway, his footsteps barely making a sound as he disappeared from sight. The flashlight beam flickered for a second, and then...

"Joshua!" Ruby called out, her voice full of panic. "Come back!"

No answer. The silence that followed was suffocating, and Kylie's chest tightened with dread.

Without thinking, Kylie stood up, pulling Malia with her. "We have to go after him."

Peder and Dara hesitated, fear flickering in their eyes, but Ruby quickly stood, nodding in agreement. "We can't leave him out there."

The group moved together, cautiously stepping into the hallway where Joshua had disappeared. The narrow passage was dim, the only light coming from the weak glow of the flashlight up ahead. As they made their way down the corridor, the oppressive feeling in the air grew heavier.

"Joshua?" Kylie called out, her voice low but urgent. Still, no response.

They turned a corner and saw the flashlight lying on the floor, the beam casting eerie shadows on the walls. But Joshua was nowhere in sight.

"Where is he?" Ruby whispered, panic creeping into her voice.

Kylie knelt down, picking up the flashlight, her hands trembling. The light illuminated a doorway at the end of the hall, slightly ajar. A cold draft seemed to seep from the crack, carrying with it the faintest sound of whispering.

"Something's in there," Malia said, her voice barely audible.

Kylie nodded, her heart pounding in her chest. "We don't have a choice. We have to go in."

Slowly, they approached the door, the whispers growing louder as they neared. Kylie pushed the door open, and the group stepped into a small, dimly lit room. The walls were lined with old, tattered bookshelves, and in the center of the room stood an ancient mirror, its surface cracked and foggy.

Kylie's breath caught in her throat as she saw the reflection in the mirror. Standing in the center of the room was Joshua—or at least, something that looked like him. But his eyes were hollow, and his face was twisted into a grotesque version of itself.

"Joshua?" Ruby's voice was barely a whisper.

The figure in the mirror turned slowly, its gaze locking onto Kylie's. A chill ran down her spine as she realized that the thing in the mirror wasn't Joshua at all. It was the shadow—another twisted doppelganger, wearing Joshua's face like a mask.

Kylie stepped back, her stomach twisting in fear. "It's not him. It's the shadow."

Suddenly, the lights flickered, and the whispers grew louder, filling the room with an overwhelming sense of dread. The figure in the mirror smiled, its eyes glinting with malice.

And then, without warning, the mirror shattered, plunging the room into darkness.
