NEXT DAY
I was about to knock on Yunjin's cabin door, but I noticed it was slightly ajar. Curiosity piqued, I hesitated for a moment, wondering if I should announce myself or just walk in. The muffled sound of voices coming from inside made me pause. I leaned in closer, trying to make out what was being said.
"...they're getting closer," I heard Yunjin's voice, low and controlled, but tinged with something that sounded like concern.
"I know," a second voice responded, one I couldn't immediately recognize. "But it's only a matter of time before they figure out the truth."
My stomach twisted, a wave of unease washing over me. Who were they talking about? What truth? I held my breath, trying to stay as quiet as possible.
"Just keep them in line," Yunjin said. "We can't afford any mistakes now. If they start suspecting anything, it's over for us."
The other person mumbled something in response, but I couldn't hear it clearly. My heart pounded in my chest, every instinct telling me to leave before they noticed I was eavesdropping. But I couldn't pull myself away.
Suddenly, the conversation stopped. Footsteps began approaching the door, and panic surged through me. I stepped back quickly, acting like I had just arrived, raising my hand to knock.
Before I could, Yunjin appeared in the doorway, her usual calm and composed expression masking whatever conversation had just taken place.
"Sena," she said, her tone smooth, but her eyes scanned me, as if gauging whether I'd overheard anything. "What can I do for you?"
I swallowed hard, trying to keep my voice steady. "I wanted to discuss the new leads we've found on the case," I said, hoping my nervousness wasn't too obvious.
Yunjin smiled, but there was something unsettling about it now that I had overheard that conversation. "Come in. Let's talk."
As I stepped inside, my mind raced with questions. What was Yunjin hiding? And how much did I really know about the person I once looked up to as a mentor?
"What were you doing? All alone?" I asked, scanning the room subtly, looking for the second man whose voice I had heard earlier. My eyes flickered around, but the office seemed empty aside from Yunjin. There was no trace of the person she'd been speaking to moments before.
Yunjin raised an eyebrow, her smile barely wavering, but I noticed a flicker of something-perhaps unease-cross her features. "Just going over some things for the case," she replied smoothly. "Is everything okay, Sena?"
I didn't want to let on that I'd overheard anything. Instead, I nodded, trying to appear casual. "Yeah... I just thought I heard someone in here with you."
Yunjin's eyes locked onto mine for a brief moment, and then she shook her head. "Just me," she said, a small, dismissive laugh escaping her. "Maybe the voices from the hallway carried over."
She was too composed, and her answer too quick, but I forced a smile and let it go, for now. "Right. Must have been that."
Yunjin motioned for me to sit down. "Now, what did you want to discuss about the leads?"
I hesitated briefly, knowing that whatever was going on behind the scenes, I needed to act normal, at least for now. "We've narrowed down a location that fits the description from Yuki and Taesong. It's an old storage facility near the docks. Namjoon and I were thinking of going in with a small team to check it out."
Yunjin leaned back in her chair, nodding thoughtfully. "That sounds promising. Proceed with caution, though. Whoever is behind this, they're dangerous, and I have a feeling they won't go down easily."
