Mikey Madison sat in her hotel room, staring at the digital clock on the nightstand, its neon-red numbers glowing against the dim light of the room. The press tour for Anora had been a whirlwind. She'd spent the past few weeks flying from city to city, attending interviews, photoshoots, and red-carpet events, yet her mind kept wandering back to her family. Every moment she was away from them felt like a lifetime. She missed the warmth of Jenna's arms, the sweet sounds of their children—six-month-old Michael and one-year-old Zachariah—and the joy they filled their home with.
Her phone buzzed on the nightstand beside her, a reminder of the packed schedule she had ahead in the morning, but at that moment, all Mikey wanted was to hear Jenna's voice. She missed her wife and their children terribly. The silence of the hotel room felt oppressive, stark in comparison to the laughter and liveliness back home.
With a sigh, she grabbed her phone and scrolled through her recent calls until she landed on Jenna's number. She hesitated for a moment, worried about disturbing them. It was late, and Jenna had probably just put the kids to bed. Still, the need to check in, to feel even the smallest connection to home, won out. She pressed the call button and held the phone to her ear.
After a few rings, Jenna answered, her voice soft and a little sleepy. "Hey, love," she whispered, a yawn escaping before she could finish the sentence. "How's the tour going?"
Mikey smiled at the sound of Jenna's voice, her heart swelling with warmth. "Busy, exhausting," she admitted, running a hand through her dark hair. "I miss you guys so much. How are Zach and Mikey? Are they asleep?"
Jenna let out a soft chuckle. "Zach's knocked out. She had a big day running around the house and terrorizing poor Jam. But Michael... he's been fussing a little tonight. I just got him back to sleep a few minutes ago."
Mikey could almost picture it—Jenna sitting in the nursery, holding their son in her arms, gently rocking him until his tiny eyes closed. The image tugged at Mikey's heart, making the distance between them feel even greater. "I hate being away for so long," she said quietly. "I wish I could be there with you. Hold you all. It feels like I'm missing out on everything."
"You're not missing out on anything important, I promise," Jenna reassured her, though Mikey could hear the tiredness in her voice. "Well, aside from Zach's new obsession with trying to climb every piece of furniture in the house."
"Already?" Mikey laughed softly, her heart aching with the desire to see it for herself. "She's not even two yet! She's going to give you a run for your money."
"Oh, trust me, she already has," Jenna said with a playful sigh. "She's got your stubbornness, that's for sure."
Mikey smiled at the teasing but couldn't shake the pang of guilt. Missing milestones—no matter how small—was the hardest part of her job. She longed to see Zachariah's latest antics, to cradle Michael when he cried in the middle of the night. "How are you holding up?" she asked, her tone shifting to concern. "You sound tired."
"I'm okay," Jenna assured her, though her voice was softer now. "It's just...hard doing this without you sometimes. But I'm managing. The kids keep me on my toes."
"I wish I could make it easier for you," Mikey whispered. "I wish I could be there."
Jenna was quiet for a moment, and Mikey could hear the faint sound of Michael's soft breaths over the phone, a soothing rhythm in the background. "You're doing what you love, and that's important," Jenna finally said, her voice filled with love and understanding. "We'll be here when you get back. The kids won't forget you, I promise."
Mikey swallowed the lump in her throat, her chest tightening at Jenna's words. "Do you think Michael's getting used to me not being there?" The question hung in the air, heavy with her fears.
"Not a chance," Jenna replied firmly. "He knows his mama. Every time he hears your voice on the phone, his little eyes light up. And when you get home, he's going to be all smiles, just like always."
Mikey felt a tear slip down her cheek, quickly wiping it away with the back of her hand. She missed those smiles. She missed everything about her family. "I can't wait to hold them," she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. "To hold you."
"You will soon," Jenna reminded her gently. "Just a few more days, and then you can cuddle them—and me—as much as you want."
Mikey chuckled softly, trying to keep her emotions in check. "I'll probably never let go."
Jenna's laughter came through the phone, light and comforting. "You might have to fight Zach for a spot, though. She's become quite the mama's girl lately."
"That doesn't surprise me," Mikey replied with a fond smile. "She's always had a way of stealing my spot in the bed."
Jenna hummed in agreement. "She's got some strong opinions about where she sleeps. And Michael...well, let's just say he's not far behind. You might come home to find the bed a little more crowded than when you left."
Mikey laughed, the sound easing some of the ache in her chest. "I wouldn't mind that. The more, the merrier."
The two of them fell into a comfortable silence, connected across the miles by the quiet sounds of the night on both ends of the phone. Mikey could almost imagine she was there with them, in their cozy home, surrounded by the people she loved most in the world. But the cold, sterile hotel room was a far cry from the warmth of their life together.
"I wish I could stay on the phone with you all night," Mikey murmured, her eyes fluttering closed as she listened to the faint hum of their home through the receiver. "It makes me feel closer to you."
"Me too," Jenna whispered back. "But you've got a big day tomorrow. Get some rest, okay? We'll be here when you're done."
Mikey hesitated, not wanting to let go of this moment, but knowing Jenna was right. "Call me if you need anything, alright?" she said softly. "Even if it's in the middle of the night."
"I will," Jenna promised. "But we're fine. The kids are fine. And we're so, so proud of you, Mikey."
Mikey's heart swelled with love and gratitude. "I love you," she whispered, the words filled with all the longing she felt. "I love you so much."
"I love you too," Jenna replied, her voice a gentle caress across the distance. "And we'll be waiting for you when you get home."
As Mikey hung up the phone, she took a deep breath, letting the quiet of the hotel room settle around her once more. The emptiness still gnawed at her, but knowing her family was safe, loved, and waiting for her made it a little easier to bear. She climbed into the cold bed, pulling the blankets up around her, and closed her eyes, trying to picture what it would be like when she finally made it back home.
She imagined Zachariah running to greet her at the door, her little arms outstretched, and Michael's bright eyes lighting up when he saw her. She could almost hear Jenna's laughter as they all crowded around her, filling the house with joy. The thought brought a small, contented smile to her lips as she drifted off to sleep, dreaming of the moment she would finally be back where she belonged.
