Mabel groaned as the key jammed again. She jiggled it in frustration, muttering under her breath. The lock had been giving them trouble for weeks, and despite her telling River countless times to fix it, nothing had been done. Typical. Shoving her shoulder against the door, it finally clicked open. She stepped into the apartment, the familiar scent of lavender mingling with the faint aroma of something baking, probably from a neighbor down the hall.

But instead of the warm greeting she expected from River, Mabel's eyes landed on a stranger. Standing casually in their living room doorway was a short-haired blonde with pink tips, wearing one of River's oversized sweatshirts. Her heart stuttered for a moment as the girl turned around, eyes bright and cheerful as if nothing was amiss.

"Oh, hi," the girl said, blinking as if surprised to see Mabel there. "Can I help you?"

Mabel stared at her, the sight of the stranger wearing River's clothes igniting a spark of anger in her chest. "I live here," she said, her voice blunt and clipped. Her mind was already racing, imagining the worst-case scenario. Was River cheating on her?

The girl's confusion only deepened as she tilted her head, seemingly caught off guard. "You must be Mabel," she said with a soft smile, as if that should clear everything up.

Mabel narrowed her eyes, crossing her arms as she tried to figure out who the hell this woman was. "Yeah, and you are?"

"I'm Maddie," the girl replied nonchalantly, as if her name alone was explanation enough.

"Maddie..." Mabel repeated slowly, the name unfamiliar on her tongue. Who was this girl? And why had River never mentioned her before?

Maddie nodded enthusiastically. "Yeah, I'm Jade's godmother."

Mabel froze at the word godmother. Her eyes flickered toward the hallway, where Jade's toys were scattered across the floor. Jade's godmother? The woman River had mentioned maybe once, years ago, in passing? Mabel's mind reeled as she tried to piece together the puzzle. "I've never met you," she said, her voice tight with suspicion.

Maddie's face softened, her smile faltering as if realizing the tension in the room. "Oh... River's never introduced us? I figured, since we live in the same town..." She trailed off, rubbing the back of her neck awkwardly.

"No, she hasn't," Mabel snapped, her irritation rising. Why hadn't River mentioned this Maddie before? And why was she so comfortable in their home, wearing River's clothes, no less?

Maddie looked genuinely surprised by this, but Mabel wasn't convinced. River never talking about her? How was that possible? They'd been together for years, and yet this supposed godmother had never once come up in conversation. It didn't make sense. Mabel's stomach twisted with unease.

"Right," Maddie muttered, clearly uncomfortable under Mabel's scrutiny. "I guess it never came up."

Mabel bit back the sharp retort on her tongue. That didn't explain why Maddie was here now, standing in her living room like she belonged there. Was River keeping things from her? Hiding her relationship with Maddie? The thought made her stomach churn.

Before she could press Maddie any further, the sound of keys jingling at the door caught her attention. A moment later, the door swung open, and River walked in, Jade trailing close behind her. Jade spotted Mabel first, her face lighting up with excitement.

"Mama!" Jade squealed, rushing over and wrapping her arms around Mabel's legs.

Mabel forced a smile, bending down to kiss Jade's head, but her gaze quickly shifted to River, who looked surprised to see her. "Hey, you're home early," River said, setting down her bag.
