Katie Torres tiptoed across the living room, the soft glow of her phone lighting her path. Her parents, Allison and Carlos, were out of town for the weekend, leaving her in charge of Evan and Ellie. As much as she loved her siblings, she was more interested in sneaking out to a party with her girlfriend, Kat Walker, than playing babysitter. Tonight was supposed to be perfect—she'd promised Kat they'd make it out unnoticed. But first, she had to get past her sleeping siblings.
As she grabbed her leather jacket from the couch, the door creaked slightly. Katie froze. Ellie, who was sleeping in the next room, had always been a light sleeper. Katie waited for a few seconds, listening for any movement, but the house remained quiet. She smiled, relieved. She shot a text to Kat.
Katie: Almost out. You ready?
Kat's response came back almost immediately.
Kat: Been ready for the last hour, babe. Get your butt over here.
Katie chuckled under her breath and moved toward the front door. She carefully turned the doorknob when—thud. She had knocked over a chair.
A small voice called from down the hallway. "Katie?"
Katie cursed under her breath. "Go back to sleep, Ellie," she whispered loudly, hoping her eight-year-old sister would let it go.
But Ellie was wide awake now, standing in the hallway with a suspicious look on her face. "Where are you going?"
"Uh, nowhere," Katie lied. "Just...getting some fresh air."
Ellie's eyes narrowed. She may have been small, but she was sharp. "It's 11 at night. You don't need fresh air, you're going to a party!"
Katie groaned. "Fine, yes. But you can't tell Mom and Dad."
Ellie's lips curved into a sly smile. "I won't...on one condition."
Katie knew where this was going. "What do you want?"
"First, I want you to stay in. No party," Ellie said. Katie's heart sank. "And second, we're watching a movie. You, me, and Kat."
Katie's jaw dropped. "How did you know about Kat?"
Ellie shrugged like it was obvious. "I'm not stupid, Katie. I see how you look at her. Plus, she's in your phone under 'K-heart.' Not very secretive."
Katie sighed. "Fine. Movie night. But that's it, okay?"
Ellie grinned triumphantly and dashed back to her room, fully awake now. As Katie pulled out her phone to text Kat, Evan shuffled down the hallway, rubbing his eyes. "Why is Ellie awake?" the fifteen-year-old asked sleepily.
Katie groaned again. "Go back to bed, Evan. This doesn't involve you."
But Ellie, already sensing an opportunity, jumped in. "Actually, Evan, we're having a movie night. You can join if you want."
Evan, already bored with his video games, shrugged. "Sure, whatever."
Katie facepalmed. Her night had taken a serious detour. She quickly texted Kat.
Katie: Change of plans. Ellie caught me sneaking out. We're watching a movie now.
Kat's reply was almost instant.
Kat: You serious?
Katie: Yeah. You still wanna come over? If not, I understand.
Kat sent a winking emoji.
Kat: I'm in. Movie nights with you are way better than any party.
Katie smiled, her mood lifting slightly. Even though this wasn't how she'd planned the evening, at least she'd still get to hang out with Kat. Plus, she secretly enjoyed watching movies with her siblings, even if she'd never admit it.
A few minutes later, there was a soft knock at the door. Katie opened it to find Kat standing there in her signature leather jacket, a smirk on her face. "So, this is what rebellion looks like in the Torres household?"
Katie chuckled, stepping aside to let her in. "Welcome to the chaos."
As the two girls walked into the living room, Ellie was already picking out a movie. "We're watching Frozen," she declared.
Katie shot Kat a look, but her girlfriend only smiled. "I love Frozen," Kat said, much to Katie's surprise.
"You would," Katie teased.
Ellie beamed and immediately started up the movie. Katie and Kat sat down on the couch next to her, while Evan lounged in the armchair, looking less than enthusiastic but not complaining.
Halfway through the movie, Ellie suddenly jumped up. "Wait, we need snacks. We can't watch a movie without snacks!"
Katie groaned. "Ellie, can't we just finish the movie?"
But Ellie wasn't listening. "Katie, you promised a movie and baking. So now we're baking."
Katie exchanged a look with Kat, who simply shrugged. "Let's just get it over with. She's not going to stop."
In the kitchen, Ellie was in charge, much to Katie's dismay. "Okay, we're making chocolate chip cookies," Ellie announced.
As the four of them gathered around the kitchen island, Katie and Kat handled most of the heavy lifting—mixing the dough, cracking the eggs, and measuring the ingredients. Ellie directed the whole operation, and Evan mostly hovered, eating chocolate chips out of the bowl when Ellie wasn't looking.
"This is definitely not what I had planned for tonight," Katie muttered as she stirred the dough.
Kat leaned over and kissed her on the cheek. "Yeah, but you're with me, so it's not all bad, right?"
Katie smiled, feeling her mood lighten. "Yeah, you're right."
As the cookies baked, they returned to the living room to finish the movie. Ellie was curled up between Katie and Kat, her eyes glued to the screen as Elsa sang about letting go. Evan, surprisingly invested, was on the edge of his seat.
Katie glanced at Kat, who gave her a playful nudge. "I kinda like this," Kat whispered. "It's...cozy."
Katie smiled. "You're such a softie."
When the movie ended and the cookies were done, they all gathered around the kitchen table with glasses of milk, munching on the freshly baked cookies. Ellie had crumbs on her face, Evan was dunking his cookies like there was no tomorrow, and Katie and Kat shared a look—one that said, Maybe tonight wasn't what we expected, but it's pretty perfect.
As they finished up, Ellie stretched and yawned. "Okay, I'm going to bed. Thanks for staying in, Katie. Love you."
Katie ruffled her sister's hair. "Yeah, yeah. Love you too, squirt."
Evan headed to bed without much of a word, and soon, the house was quiet again. Katie turned to Kat with a grin. "Well, that wasn't exactly the wild night we planned."
Kat smiled, pulling Katie closer. "Honestly? I wouldn't change a thing."
Katie kissed her softly. "Me neither."
