SAGE'S POV
Two days have passed...
Yesterday, I spent most of my time between the hospital with my daughter and out of it with my godfather's family.
My nonno doesn't want me to visit him while he's not discharged. He doesn't want me to see him weakened. Only my abuela, father, and aunts (because they are nurses) are allowed to visit him.
My godfather's family left late in the evening.
I accompanied them to the airport. Sanya, Beatrove's wife, was quite emotional during our farewell. They both claimed that I had changed Czar and that they hadn't seen him display this much emotion since he was a baby, but I think they're just exaggerating.
"You pushed for him without even noticing, and he willingly followed your lead," she whispered to me during a warm and tight hug, followed by a kiss on my cheek. "Thank you," she repeated again and moved on to my grandma. They became friends during their short stay.
"Bye dear, have a good trip." My avó bid her and gave her a bag she hid for them.
"Rosa, you didn't have to!"
"Oh, hush, child! Remember to call me if you want any of my products. Oh, and when the next baby comes, tell me! I'll make a whole trousseau!"
My godfather was more contained upon our farewell—a simple "Call me if you need anything or something" and a quick hug, and that was it. He messed with my hair before boarding the plane with Czar, who barely took his head off his phone, and as soon as Sanya boarded, they were gone.
Today, however, I'm collecting Damiano's remains.
Avó Rosa helped me prepare a small ceremony for him, but before that, I had to speak with his father.
The man has the right to know he had a son.
"Is he coming?" I asked as soon as I saw my dad returning.
"Yes, he won't take long," Dad said, reaching my side and side-hugging me. I laid my head on his chest and took a deep breath before closing my eyes.
I have a horrible headache that feels worse than a hungover- My head is pounding as if my heart had taken residence in there. My eyeballs hurt, my scalp is itchy, my breathing gets all fucked up from time to time, and I've been a goddamn mess since this whole thing started.
Remind me again: Why did I have to obey my mom and come find my father? This shitty deal seems less and less appealing as each day passes.
"I want to visit mom and Raul," I said with my eyes closed. Dad took it in a stride and just agreed.
"No problem." If you say so, Sin Sinner.
"If possible, today."
"Okay."
"Okay," I repeated and shook my head lightly. There is going to happen some shitty thing that's going to stop us from going today. How much do you want to bet?
"Hey, do you want to bet that we won't be able to visit mom today?" I opened my eyes and looked up at him with a lazy half-smile. He didn't look amused at the prospect and refused, so avó and I made a bet with uncle Claude. They were both around the Green Club, so I thought, 'Why not?'. Claude bet 50€ that dad would keep his promise. I bet that he would try but fail to keep it due to external forces, and grandma just said he wouldn't keep the promise.
Not long after, the main door of the closed club was knocked on, and uncle Claude excused himself to go get it.
"Hey, avó, how do you tell a man that he's a father but his child is dead?" That's something I've been pondering for a while. Do you just rip the band-aid off or do it slowly?
