After hours of waiting for news about her son, Xana was handed a brochure on 'How to care for and understand people with SCI.'

She started reading it in confusion but soon regretted it.

'SCI stands for spinal cord injury. A SCI can lead to partial or complete paralysis, depending on the severity and location of the injury.-'

"He is paraplegic?" Xana started to cry. Her whole world seemed to have been shifted and collapsed, burnt down the ashes of hope and scattered in the winds, never to be seen again.

"Yes, but—" The number '2' in the brochure caught her attention, and amidst her falling tears, she read that little bit of more information.

'Spinal cord injuries can vary in severity, but some common symptoms include: Loss of Movement, Loss of Sensation, Pain or Intense Stinging Sensations, Loss of Bladder or Bowel Control, and Changes in Sexual Function.

Spinal cord injuries (SCIs) are serious and can have life-altering consequences.

Essentially, there are 2 types of SCIs: Complete injury and incomplete injury.

Complete Injury: This means there is a total loss of sensation and motor function below the level of the injury.

Incomplete Injury: Some function remains below the level of the injury. The extent of this function can vary widely.'

"What kind of SCI is his?" She asked, desperate. If her youngest son had the second type, there could be hope. She would ensure he had everything necessary to aid his recovery, and he would never lack a thing!

"Thanks to his timely rescue, he has an incomplete injury. Had that man jumped on him for a second time, the child might not have made it to tell the tale."

"Will he be able to walk?"

"He might be able to walk again. However, it is not a guarantee." The doctor tried to lighten the situation for the grieving mother, but he had no such luck.

"He is paraplegic!" She cried again to her silent oldest son, who collected her in a tight embrace and shared her sorrows. Her husband still wasn't back from handling the bastard who left her youngest like this. And as much as Xana wished for his comfort and sweet reassuring words, she knew the later he got back, the more that scum would suffer.

SAGE'S POV

You never know how fun it is to play doctors until you fully embrace the game. Making a man lose a dozen or more kilos was an interesting experience, but making him experience what he did to my newest cousin... That was the cherry on top!

I almost had to bleach my hair to get rid of all the blood.

Francesco hasn't left yet. He's getting rid of the whale. I haven't called Zeke yet to learn about the kid. I knew he had to have surgery, though it's been close to six hours, so he might already be out.

It took him a while to pick up. For a moment there, he had me fearing the worst.

"Zeke, how's your brother?" Aunt Xana was crying in the background, setting my nerves ablaze with fear of a failed mission.

"He--" He took a shuddering inhale and exhaled loudly before returning to what he was saying.

"He is paraplegic."

Shit. It's bad... But it could be worse.

"Better that than dead." Had he been tetraplegic, I would claim otherwise. But I've met a paraplegic assassin, and he knew his art. Acumpoints, knives, silver needles, and small guns, as well as poisons, were his specialty. He rarely used the knives and the guns, but I know he could manage them perfectly. He preferred the needles for being discrete but potentially deadly. With his state, he was easily dismissed as a danger, but when underestimated, his true potential can shine.
