Every week Halyn got an email from her mother. Calls were possible, but difficult. If they were working in a city with strong service, she'd get one of those from her parents. Most of the time, they worked away from the modern world.

Halyn lived for the emails. Now, her parents were in the same country as her. They'd just landed at the airport a few hours away.

"Yeah, I can't wait for you to meet everyone," Halyn said.

"You're doing all right? Are you holding on okay? I know things have been complicated and scary given the situation with your roommate," her father said.

Halyn let out a sour laugh. "Yes, I'm fine. I haven't been in any direct danger."

Yet, but I'll leave that part out. They didn't need to know how close the demons were to harming her in the forest.

"The boy you're going with to the dance hasn't tried to hurt her again, has he? Or you?"

Halyn scoffed. "Denver is a lot of talk, but he wouldn't actually do anything to me."

She sensed a goodness in him. Every so often it came out, and she could watch the war he waged within himself to do the right thing. He said a lot of things. Most of them came across as showy rather than serious. He was selfish and impulsive. Dangerous? Not so much. Even with him taking Cheyenne's blood.

Stupid? Definitely. Scary? For sure. Dangerous? No. Denver did not seek to cause harm.

"We'll be the judge of that when we arrive. From there, we'll adjust your protection wards," Mom said.

"Are you sure this is the place I'm supposed to be?" Halyn asked.

Pangaia was a dream come true for her. It had all of the experiences she'd seen on TV, but had yet to actually live out. Every day, she had a new adventure. She was making friends. So many friends! Not just the twins and Cheyenne, but from all the social circles within the school. Homecoming would be her first dance, and her first football game.

All of the things a lot of her peers took for granted, she soaked up like a sponge. Halyn didn't want to leave...but she also didn't know if she should stay.

"Yes," Mom said.

"You're in the right spot. You'll see," Dad added.

Like usual, someone was keeping information from her. That seemed to be a trend. Cheyenne did it, the twins did it, staff did it, and now her parents. Cheyenne is going through the same thing. Must be the cool new trend: keeping secrets.
