Sophie's POV
The girl had removed her helmet, armour, and glowing spear. She was wearing a white dress with norse runes along the collar and cuffs. She had taken her headscarf off and was wrapped around her neck. At her waist was a golden belt belt, from which hung a normal set of keys and a single bladed axe.
"It's you." I told the person. It wasn't a question. "You're the one who took me here."
"Yes, I am." She looked at me questioningly. "Why did you look like you had a mental breakdown?"
"I haven't had good experiences with fire." I answered simply. At that, the fireplace suddenly switched off, and the neon yellow fire was replaced with normal red-orange flames. The girl looked quite shocked at this."That's strange, I've never seen the hotel make a mistake in someone's room before." This made me worry a bit. "Anyway," she held out her hand. "I'm Samirah Al-abbas, but you can call me Sam, everyone does. I'll be your Valkyrie this evening, and I'll be taking you to dinner today." She turned for the door. "One more thing, keep your mouth shut, try to look brave, and most of all, don't you dare say that you don't deserve to be here. If you embarrass me, I'll be the first to kill you." She smiled sweetly at me and exited the room while I quickly got up to follow.
When I had just exited my room, a massive fog horn sound erupted through the corridor. "What was that?" I questioned Sam.
"That was the alarm calling us to dinner." She replied.
Down the hall, doors started opening as the inhabitants started to go to dinner.Out from the door marked 'Alex Fierro', came a petite person with dyed green hair and sharp facial features they had a sly grin, almost exactly like Keefe's signature smirk. Looking at the person's eyes, I noted that they were heterochromatic, one dark brown, and the other a pale amber. They wore a pink and green argyle sweater-vest with lime green jeans and a rose high-top. Around their waist.
"Hey, Sam. Hey, new person, " Alex said.
"Hey." Sam dragged me past Alex. I managed a shy wave before being dragged away. The next door we passed, inscribed with 'Magnus Chase', had a boy with dirty blond hair that hung to his jawline and grey eyes that had a strange haunted look to them, I got the feeling that he had been through a lot, just like I had.
In front of the third door stood a person with short, curly hair, a lanky frame, and wearing a blue wool coat with brass buttons and chevrons on the sleeve. I remembered learning about those uniforms from before I had gone to the Lost Cities. They were a U.S. Civil War uniform. "How you doing?" He smiled at me.
"Uhh... Fine, I guess, just slightly deader than I'm used to." He laughed.
"You get used to it, don't worry. Just ask Alex or Magnus. They're the newest rectruits here, apart from you. Call me T.J."
"Sophie, we need to keep going." I heard Sam say impatiently.
"Bye, I guess, T.J." I told him.
"Goodbye."We passed a girl with frizzy red hair and green eyes who must have been Mallory Keen. She was in conversation with a tall guy and calling him an 'idiot' over what seemed to be quite an insignificant thing. They were too invested in their conversation to notice us.
We finally reached the elevator, and Sam pushed a couple of einherjar out of the way."Get the next car, guys. we're in a hurry." The cage doors closed, and she slid one of her keys into the override slot on the panel and pressed a red rune. The elevator started to descend.
"I'll take you into the dining hall before the main doors open. That way, you'll be able to get a lay of the land before it gets too crowded."
"Thanks, I guess."
Nordic easy-listening music started to play from the speakers. The silence was starting to get slightly awkward, so I decided to think of something to say that wouldn't sound strange.
"Why does everyone on that floor look about my age? Do only teenagers make it to Valhalla?" Sam shook her head, "Einherjar are sorted by age. You're in the lowest tier, which goes up to the age of nineteen."
"How many tiers are there?" I asked.
"There are three tiers, teens and younger, adults, and seniors. You won't see the other two tiers very often. The adults tend to believe that teens are less mature and not to be trusted, even if those teens have been here hundreds of years longer. The seniors here also don't tend to mix well with the other tiers. Imagine a really violent retirement home."
"Huh. Okay.""By the way, I've been meaning to ask you a question since I brought you here." She asked after a couple of seconds of listening to a man singing in Norwegian.
"What's the question? But I can't promise you an answer.""When I was watching you fight those cloaked people, I saw strange, armadillo-like creatures and what looked like a small giant. What were they? I've never seen those before."
I spent a few seconds processing this and then realised who she was talking about. "They were close friends of mine, and I don't know if they're alright or not. As for their species, I don't think I can tell you that without breaching a treaty."
Samirah looked confused for a second, and then her face regained its composure. The elevator stopped moving, and the cage doors slid open.
"Welcome to the Feast Hall of the Slain." She waved her arms like a presenter. The dining hall was massive. Roughly the size of a concert arena. Tiered seating curved downwards from the nosebleed area.In the centre of the room stood a massive tree, about half the size of Candleshade. It sprouted through a massive opening in the dome with stars glittering beyond. In the tree, I spotted a massive waterfall falling from somewhere in the branches. I spotted a goat trotting around in the branches, milk constantly pouring out of its udders.Four einherjar holding a massive pail were running about below it, trying to get the milk into the pail. From how drenched they were, I assumed they missed a lot.
Looking closer to the tree, I saw plenty of animals skittering about in the branches. "Anyway, we'd better get to our seats before -" Suddenly, the massive oak doors at the perimeter of the room banged open and the thousands of einharji swarmed in.
"Looks like we took too long because dinner is served." Sam told me grimly.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1137 wordsI've decided that, in the next chapter, Sophie will eat the meat because I believe that Sophie would actually eat meat if she were in this scenario. In most other fanfictions that I've read, she's usually a vegetarian. However, in the books, she ate a chicken sandwich and compares some foods in the Lost Cities to meat products, such as burgers.
As always, if you see any mistakes please kindly comment where they are and what the mistake is. It helps.
I'll try to get the next chapter put soon
PS. Which cover do you guys prefer?
New one
Or old one?
