Sophie's POV

"Who are the Norns?" I asked Sam. She responded by looking at me as if I had grown a second head and sighed in an exasperated tone.

"The Norns are responsible for spinning the threads of destiny or reading the future," she shifted in her seat, "Them showing up now is bad. They only appear in extreme cases."
I didn't want to be an extreme case. I just wanted to fade into the background or ,even better, go back to my old life.

As the Norns approached, I realised just how tall they were, easily taller than Sandor, so probably 9-10 feet tall. A trail of misty white fog followed their footsteps as they strode in unison towards our table. Their faces under their hoods were beautiful but unnerving - white as a sheet, including their eyes. They were more than a bit creepy

They stopped about 20 feet away from the table and turned up their palms.

Sophie Foster.

I couldn't tell which Norn had spoken. The soft disembodied voice rumbled through the Hall.

Herald of the Eternal Night

The crowd stirred uneasily. I didn't like the sound of the word 'herald', I liked the sound of 'Eternal Night' even less. I shifted uncomfortably. In the hands of the middle Norn, fog collected and solidified into six runestones. She threw them into the air. They started floating above her, growing to the size of a poster board. They all had various words and phrases in norse runes. None of them made much sense to me.

The rune in the centre seemed to glow brighter than the others, drawing everyone's attention:

I read it as 'roots', 'tree', or -strangely- 'mysteries/secrets'

Rótsveigr. The voice spoke again. The rune of Yggdrasil.

Thousands of einherjar shifted nervously, the sound of clanking armour filling the Hall. This time, I knew what the Norn was talking about. I remembered this from my time before leaving for the Lost Cities. Yggdrasil was the massive tree that connects all the worlds.

The Norns spoke together, filling the room with their ghostly voices.

Twelve days hence , shadows shall vie,

A silent flutter marks the path where answers lie.

Through fragile wings, destiny is spun,

Or darkness shall claim what the light has begun.

Then, the glowing runes dissolved. All three Norns bowed in unison and dissolved into fog.

I glanced towards Sam, "So... how often does that happen?"
I hadn't noticed that she had become incredibly stiff while the Norns were delivering their prophecy. She relaxed.

"It's only happened once while I've worked here," she looked towards a table at the opposite end of the room, where I assumed the receiver of the previous prophecy was sat. How she knew exactly where they were sat, I didn't know.

She fiddled with her headscarf again. "This hasn't happened for hundreds of years, but then there are two einherjar who have been given a prophecy in just over a year between each other. This is bad. Evil is becoming more common."

This troubled me.

At the Thanes' table, the thanes conferred while the thousands of warriors inspected me like I was an insect. I hid behind my hair.
Helgi stood, his chair scraping against the floor.

"Sophie Elizabeth Foster," his voice caught the attention of everyone in the room,"we find your destiny to be disturbing. The lords of Valhalla must think upon this further. And Samirah Al-Abbas," he looked at Sam, who became still as a statue."You do not seem to have made a mistake this time. We thanes commend you," He turned to the rest of the Hall,"and so concludes tonight's Feast. Tomorrow, I will see you on the field of battle! Sleep well and to glorious death!"

Yay! Another chapter!🥳

Hopefully, I'll get the next one out within a few days.

As usual, if you spot any SPaG mistakes, please comment them so I can fix them.

The rune and its name are both generated by AI because I couldn't find any appropriate real runes on the Internet. Also, I am too lazy to come up with them myself.

Bye 👋
