MATT SAT ON THE WORN-OUT COUCH IN HIS ROOM, his legs stretched out and crossed at the ankles, one arm lazily draped over the back. the sound of vivienne's soft laughter filled the room, a sound he'd come to love more than he'd ever admit out loud. she was sitting on the floor, cross-legged, fiddling with something in her hands, probably one of the random things he had lying around his room, like an old video game controller or a notebook he never used. it was a habit of hers, playing with little things whenever they hung out, and he found it strangely endearing.

he couldn't stop the grin that crept across his face as he watched her. everything about vivienne felt easy, natural, like she belonged here with him, even if the world outside tried to paint them as two people who shouldn't be together. the thing was, they weren't even officially together. not yet, anyway. everyone already had their opinions, and maybe that's what kept them from putting a label on it. but even if they weren't dating, the way she was always around and how she fit so perfectly into his space, it sure felt like something close to it.

"what are you smiling at?" vivienne asked, glancing up at him with those big, curious eyes that always seemed to see right through him.

he shrugged, trying to play it off as nothing, but he knew she wasn't buying it. "nothing. just thinking."

she tilted her head, her hair falling over her shoulder as she gave him a knowing look. "thinking about what?"

matt leaned back further, feeling a little smug that he had her attention now. "about how much better my life's gotten since you decided to hang around," he said with a wink.

vivienne rolled her eyes, but her smile didn't falter. "oh, please. you were doing just fine without me."

"yeah, but it's way more fun now," matt replied, his voice softening as he added, "i like having you around, rose."

there was a brief silence between them, the kind that was comfortable, where neither of them felt the need to fill the space with words. matt watched as she ducked her head slightly, her cheeks turning the faintest shade of pink. he liked that he could still get that reaction out of her, no matter how cocky she pretended to be.

"you're ridiculous," she finally muttered, standing up and moving over to the couch to sit beside him.

"you love it," he teased, nudging her with his shoulder.

"yeah, yeah," she said, but there was no denying the smile that tugged at her lips.

matt let out a low chuckle, shifting slightly so his arm could wrap around her shoulders, pulling her in closer. he loved moments like this, just the two of them, no drama, no rumors, just them. it was rare, and he savored every second of it.

vivienne leaned into him, her head resting against his chest as her fingers absentmindedly traced little patterns on his leg. it was such a simple thing, but it made his heart race in a way he wasn't used to. being with her had a way of softening all the edges he normally kept sharp.

"what are you thinking about?" matt asked after a few minutes, his voice low as he gazed down at her.

"just... this," vivienne said softly, her eyes flickering up to meet his. "us. how we got here."

matt raised an eyebrow. "what, you didn't expect to be spending all your time with a troublemaker like me?"

"honestly?" she said, laughing lightly. "no. i didn't. but... i'm glad i am."

he could tell she meant it, and that made something warm settle in his chest. "good," he said, his tone more serious now. "because i'm not letting you go anytime soon."

vivienne lifted her head slightly, giving him that playful look he'd come to know so well. "is that so?"

"yeah," he said, his hand moving to cup her cheek as he leaned down, his forehead resting against hers. "you're stuck with me."

she smiled up at him, her eyes soft and bright, and for a second, matt forgot about everything else. the rumors, the judgment, the fights. they all faded away when he was with her. vivienne made him feel like more than just the tough guy everyone expected him to be. with her, he didn't have to try so hard. he could just be.

"guess i'm okay with that," she whispered, her breath warm against his lips.

he didn't waste any more time. matt closed the distance between them, pressing his lips to hers in a slow, gentle kiss. it wasn't hurried or rough like their usual moments, it was soft, sweet, filled with everything he didn't know how to say. vivienne kissed him back just as gently, her hand sliding up to rest against the back of his neck, pulling him closer.

when they finally pulled apart, both of them were breathing a little harder, their foreheads still pressed together.

"you're trouble, you know that?" vivienne whispered, though there was no bite to her words.

"only for you," matt shot back, his voice low and teasing.

she laughed, and the sound was like music to his ears. god, he was such a sap for her, and he didn't even care. "i kinda like that," she admitted softly.

matt grinned, pressing another quick kiss to her lips before leaning back, pulling her with him so that she was half-laying on his chest. "good," he said, his voice dropping to a whisper. "because i'm not planning on changing anytime soon."

vivienne just hummed in response, her eyes closing as she settled against him, her body fitting perfectly against his. matt ran his fingers through her hair absentmindedly, feeling more at peace than he had in a long time.

in moments like this, he didn't need a label to know that what they had was real. maybe someday they'd talk about it, figure out exactly what they were. but for now, matt was happy just being close to her, knowing she felt the same way, even if they didn't put a name to it.

he didn't need to say anything else. being with her like this, in the quiet moments, was enough. they didn't need to talk about what came next, or what other people thought. all that mattered was that she was here, with him, and for the first time in a long time, matt felt like maybe things were actually going to be okay.

and as he lay there, holding her close, matt couldn't help but think that out of all the crazy, messed-up things in his life, vivienne thorn was the best thing that had ever happened to him.
