Nicholas' pov

I stood by the window, the cool breeze ruffling the edge of the curtain. The house was eerily quiet, save for the distant murmur from the next room. I wasn't one to eavesdrop but something in the tone of the conversation between Dawn and Adrian caught my attention.

It wasn't another disagreement but something different. I leaned closer to the wall trying to understand what is happening. My heart went in high pace as Dawn's voice rose above the gentle rustle of the wind.

"Why don't you leave them, they are all old enough to take care of themselves," her voice was laced with frustration, cracking with emotion. "You're always going to put them first- your family, your responsibilities. I'm tired of having to wait for you,  I want to be your only priority not them."

I frowned, Dawn sounded more desperate than usual. I had always liked her - even considered  her as my sister-in-law but this conversation was going where i hadn't expected. Adrian's  voice normally calm and collected came back in a quiet, measured tone.

"It is not that simple, Dawn. You know I can't just abandon my family. They're everything to me."

Dawn let out a bitter laugh."But what about us Adrian? You say you care, but your actions don't show it. If you really love me, you'd prove it. Leave them, Adrian. Be with me." I felt my chest tighten. Dawn wanted Adrian to leave us? I couldn't move  I was frozen in place  waiting for Adrian's response. I can't imagine my brother choosing anyone over the family-we were bound by loyalty, and Adrian had always taken that seriously.

Adrian sighed, a long drawn out breath that carried more weight than my own.  "
