Shadow stood in the doorway, watching Sonic sleep. The dim light from the hallway cast soft shadows across the room, bathing the space in an eerie calm. Sonic's breathing was shallow, steady, his body curled against the wall like a cornered animal. It made something primal stir inside of Shadow. He couldn't look away.
He knew that Sonic would wake soon, restless as always, fighting against the walls of his captivity. But here, in the silence of the room, when Sonic was asleep, Shadow could almost convince himself that things were as they should be—that Sonic was his and no one could ever take him away.
There was something different in the way Shadow's mind worked now. It wasn't enough to just keep Sonic locked away. No, he needed Sonic to accept it. To see that they were meant to be together. Sonic had to understand, eventually. The others—his so-called "friends"—would never protect him the way Shadow could.
He stepped forward quietly, the weight of his boots barely making a sound. In the stillness, all Shadow could hear was his own heartbeat. Faster than usual. Stronger. His eyes never left Sonic's form. He was so close now, so close he could reach out and touch him.
And so he did.
His gloved hand brushed against Sonic's quills, soft and careful, like he didn't want to wake him. Like he was savoring the moment of closeness, the illusion of peace. But Sonic stirred, his instincts sharper even in sleep.
Sonic's eyes fluttered open, and the moment shattered. He bolted upright, startled, his eyes locking onto Shadow's in a mixture of confusion and fury.
"Shadow," Sonic's voice was low, defensive. "What are you doing?"
Shadow pulled back, but not far. "Watching over you."
"Watching over me?" Sonic repeated bitterly, standing up and stepping back until his back pressed against the cold wall. "I don't need your protection. I need my freedom."
Shadow's red eyes gleamed in the dim light. "You don't know what you need."
"I know I don't need this," Sonic snapped, motioning to the room around him. His voice cracked slightly—whether from exhaustion or frustration, he wasn't sure anymore.
Shadow moved closer again, slow and deliberate. "Sonic, you're safer here than out there. No one can hurt you. I won't let them."
Sonic let out a dry laugh. "No one can hurt me, huh? What do you think you're doing right now?"
"I'm keeping you alive," Shadow replied, his voice calm but with a dark undercurrent. "I'm saving you from yourself."
"Saving me?" Sonic's eyes widened in disbelief. He could feel his anger bubbling up, but there was something else too—a sense of defeat creeping into his bones. "This isn't saving me, Shadow. This is—"
"What?" Shadow cut him off, his voice soft but chilling. "This is what you deserve. You can't even see it yet, but you will. Soon enough, you'll understand that this is where you're meant to be. With me."
Sonic opened his mouth to argue, but the words didn't come. His thoughts were tangled, his emotions fraying. He was tired—so tired of the same fight, the same struggle. And as much as he hated to admit it, Shadow's words were getting harder to push away.
Shadow saw the hesitation in Sonic's eyes. He stepped even closer, closing the distance between them. "You've always been running, Sonic. From me, from the world. But you can't run forever. Here, you don't have to. I'll take care of everything."
Sonic's fists clenched, but he couldn't summon the usual fire behind his defiance. He wanted to scream, to lash out, but his exhaustion was pulling him down like quicksand.
Shadow's voice softened further, almost coaxing. "You're fighting so hard, and for what? You're only hurting yourself. Let go. Stop resisting. It'll be easier, Sonic. I promise."
For the first time, Sonic felt the weight of his hopelessness settle fully into his chest. He slumped back against the wall, closing his eyes. His mind raced with thoughts of his friends—Tails, Knuckles, everyone who should be out there looking for him. But what if they weren't? What if they couldn't find him? Shadow had been one step ahead all along. Could they really outsmart him?
Sonic's voice was barely a whisper. "What if they really don't find me?"
Shadow moved closer, his breath warm against Sonic's ear. "They won't," he whispered. "You belong to me now. You always have."
Sonic shivered but didn't respond. His fists unclenched, and for a moment, he considered what it would be like to stop fighting. To give in. It would be easier, wouldn't it? To stop resisting Shadow's control, to let him take the weight of everything off his shoulders.
But then, something flickered in the back of his mind—a distant memory of all the battles he had fought, all the times he had defied impossible odds. That was who he was. Sonic the Hedgehog. He wasn't one to give in, no matter how bleak things seemed.
His eyes snapped open, and for the first time in days, there was a small but defiant glint in them. Shadow may think he had won, but Sonic wasn't broken. Not yet. He just needed to be smarter.
He could play along for now. Pretend to be weaker than he really was. Maybe that was the key. If Shadow thought he had already won, maybe Sonic could find a way to turn the tables.
He pushed himself off the wall, standing straighter. Shadow raised an eyebrow, clearly intrigued by the shift in Sonic's posture.
"Fine," Sonic said quietly, his voice steady, but there was something calculating behind it now. "Maybe you're right."
Shadow's expression softened, as if he believed Sonic's words. He stepped back, giving Sonic space. "You'll see. This will be easier for both of us."
Sonic said nothing more, but inside, his mind was already working. Let Shadow think he's in control. Let him believe that Sonic had finally broken. It was the only way.
As Shadow turned away, a small, determined smile tugged at the corners of Sonic's mouth. This fight wasn't over yet.
