OCTOBER 1976 ╱ hogwarts, scotland
"Katya the first thing you need to know about these parties is not to drink a thing Slughorn offers you," Lily said, holding the girl's hand as they walked down the empty corridors to the potion master's office.
Lily had already set ground rules for Marlene, who seemed to enjoy partying a little too much. If Lily knew Katya well, it would be extremely clear that the brunette wanted nothing to do with any form of party. In fact she was completely baffled as to why she had been invited in the first place.
She could barely do magic. Why had Professor Slughorn had any interest in her? The question rang in her head as she and Lily entered the abnormally large office. Lily gripped Katya's hand tight as they weaved around the crowded room.
It was clear Lily was trying to blend in but it was rather difficult with her bright red hair. Katya had already grown to be sympathetic towards the redhead because the poor girl seemed to gather a little too much attention for James Potter, who she was yet to meet formally.
The girls had told her about all the extravagant stunts the boy had pulled ever since first year. They had died down considerably but they still happened and it was clear Potter had moved to simply flirting with Lily rather than doing things to catch her attention.
Katya suspected Potter was starting to grow on Lily, because she could not help notice her absentmindedly searching for him. Maybe it was so absentminded...
Marlene and Alice had left a little earlier for the party, after no stop complaints from the blonde about getting all the good canapes before they ran out.
But Katya had not been ready in time to leave with the others. Marlene had told the girls he was allowed to borrow anything from her wardrobes with no trouble. Katya had been ever so grateful and spent much too long picking between a crimson dress and a navy one.
Lily didn't rush her, if it had been her first time wearing a dress and attending a party she would feel the same.
After spending at least an hour on the matter, she had gone with the red one. Lily had clearly not thought about this too deeply, while Katya had good reason to have chosen red specifically.
