NOVEMBER 1976 ╱ hogwarts, scotland
Katya woke up the next morning feeling slightly sick, but she ignored the pain, the image of Sirius winking at her still clear in her mind. Quite literally nothing could beat that today. The party that night was
"You're in a good mood," Alice said as Katya entered the Great Hall.
Saturday mornings were a lot slower than they were during the weekdays. People either woke up early for Quidditch practice or much much later, so that lunch was busier than breakfast. Marlene had risen at six that morning after James Potter called a last minute Quidditch Practice for their first game next week.
Katya was yet to see a Quidditch game, though she had no sport to compare it to other than playing a very feeble game of catch in the streets outside the orphanage, until the ball had been run over by a van,
She hadn't minded though, sports were not her sort of thing. She sat down beside Alice and poured herself a cup of coffee. Lily was seated opposite the brunette girls who looked like she needed hours more rest.
"What's up with you?" Katya asked, sipping her coffee.
The redhead pursed her lips before speaking and looked like she was blinking back tears. "Petunia, my older sister, wrote to me last night and she told me she's getting married." A small sob escaped Lily's lips and she dropped her head into her head.
Confused, Katya looked at Alice for answers. She may not know much about the world, but she knew when someone told you they were getting married you should be happy for them, especially your sister.
Alice signed, looking pitifully at Lily. "Lils and Petunia don't get along, and the man she's now engaged to is a right dick."
"Alice!" Fortescue's last few words snapped Lily of her miserable trance, transforming her face into a scold, with a hint of shock.
Katya understood why. Alice didn't seem like the type to say such things. Out of all the other Gryffindor girls, Alice seemed to have the least amount of rage, Marlene with the most and Lily and herself wavering in the middle.
It was unknown to the others, but Katya did sport a very angry girl personality at heart, being raised without parents and by possibly the most horrible people on the planet did that to a person. But every since coming to Hogwarts, she had bottled up and extreme feelings apart from joy, and surprisingly she had experienced quite a bit of it.
It could just be in a place where she had more freedom and less hurt, but she really had fun. Lily, Marlene and Alice had brought her to a reality she would never take for granted and soon she knew everything would settle. Whatever she had that was unsettled that is.
The girls finished their breakfast and strolled back up to the common room, winter sunlight brushing their faces.
The common room was almost empty, students either downstairs or still asleep. Katya couldn't process the idea of sleeping in, she had been forced to wake so early at the orphanage, any time after seven seemed wrong to her body clock.
The three girls sat by the fire, pulling out their homework when Lily reminded them that they would have no time before or after the party that night.
"Why Sirius always had his parties on Sunday's I'll never know," the redhead began, as she scribbled something on a scrap piece of parchment.
"I assume he wants to have his party on his actual birthday, but I agree it was a little short notice." Alice rambled on.
The girls sat there for who knows how long, talking and very slowly doing their homework as they waited for Marlene.
Katya had never felt so at peace. Even though she had piles of homework in front of her, the sight of it didn't make her head hurt. The calmness of the Sunday and the lack of stress was so perfect. And later that day was a party, technically her first real party, Slughorn's didn't really count.
The mystery of her invitation was still unknown to her. She had shown no skill in potions apart from how quickly she could use a knife, everything else was Lily's work.
Several loud voices filled the common room, and the Gryffindor quidditch team entered the room, none of them in high spirits aside from Potter. Most of them flocked to their dorms, sending Potter withering looks. But he, Marlene and Black sat down by the fire, covered in mud.
Alice held back a laugh at the sight of Sirius and James' hair which was ruffled and had dirt and rain flecks in it. Katya had to agree this would probably be the worst she ever saw Sirius' hair and she couldn't help smiling a little. She didn't even know why.
"God what happened?" Lily said, directing her question toward Marlene, but Sirius responded instead.
"James Potter, the world's dumbest Quidditch captain decided to still have practice when there's a huge puddle in the middle of the pitch from last week's rain. It could beat the Black Lake, that's how huge the thing is." Sirius rolled his eyes and both him and Marlene gave the Potter boy disgusted looks.
"You stupid dickhead!" They yelled in unison.
Katya and Alice watched the scene unfold, listening to the three Gryffindors – Lily had joined in, taking any opportunity she could to yell at James.
It puzzled Katya how simple life could be, and how the people she was surrounded by could only muster rage about a puddle. Puzzling indeed.
